Sabalenka came into this tournament with a 5-2 record on clay, and critics pointing fingers at the lack of Plan-B in her game. Two matches and two resounding wins later, there is a belief amongst most that Sabalenka has the game to succeed on clay. In the first round the powerful Sabalenka trounced the Chinese player Zhang Shuai in straight sets, 6-2 6-2. In the second she conquered Anna-Lena Friedsam in an hour and 20 mins, winning 6-4 6-2.

Her Quarter-final opponent is finalist from the last edition Anett Kontaveit of Estonia. Kontaveit got her campaign off to a solid start, needing two sets to see off Caroline Garcia, 6-4, 6-3, and move into the second round. In the second round she accounted for the 3rd seed Sofia Kenin. She dispatched off Kenin 7-5 6-4.
