Aryna Sabalenka had come into this tournament on the back of a hard fought defeat against Ash Barty. She had lost the Quarter-finals of the Miami Open to Barty in three sets, 4-6 7-6 3-6. Sabalenka, who has not been known to play her best tennis on clay, opened her clay court season against Zhang Shuai of China.
