World no.1 and top seed Australia’s Ash Barty has already won two tournaments this year. She started the year with a win at the WTA 500 in Melbourne and recently won the WTA Miami Open trophy as well. In the tournament so far, Barty had a bye in the first round, she took on wildcard entry and former champion the German Laura Siegemund in the second round. Barty dominated the match from the start and took the first set 6-0. The second set was a tighter affair, but Barty closed the match in two sets winning 6-0 7-5. In the quarterfinal against Karolina Pliskova, top-seeded Barty was two points from a loss on five separate occasions during the match. However, she came back from a break down in the final set to gain the victory by a 2-6 6-1 7-5.
Her Semi-final opponent is a player she knows well, Elina Svitolina. Svitolina is playing in her seventh tournament this year and she has reached the Quarter-final stage in three of them and the Semi-final stage in two of them. But, she has failed the important moments in those big matches. This will be another chance for her to reach her first WTA Final this year. In the tournament so far, she defeated Angelique Kerber in straight sets 7-6 6-3 to book her place in the Quarters.
Svitolina faced Petra Kvitova in her quarterfinal match, fourth-seeded Svitolina came perilously close to seeing her tournament come to an end. She fended off two match points in order to defeat Kvitova 6-7(4-7), 7-5, 6-2.

She goes back to slices, and drops the ball near the net. This forces the opponent to commit forward and then Barty can hit the passing shot down the flanks.
But, players like Svitolina who can run and who have a great return game such tactics can prove dangerous. Having said that at this late stage of the tournament players will be tired, especially someone like Svitolina whose whole game is based around movement.
