Barty had a lot of questions asked of her when she failed to win the Australian Open 2021 and then crashed out in her very first match in the Adelaide International. Barty took some time off after that, skipped the Middle Eastern leg of the tour and joined back in the USA for the Miami Open.
In the Miami Open she beat all the top seeds from Azarenka to Sabalenka to Andreescu to lift the Miami Open trophy. In her first tournament on clay at the Charleston Open, she was going well and had reached the Quarter-finals. But at that stage she was beaten by clay court specialist Paula Badosa. Barty had a bye in the first round, in the second she will face Germany’s Laura Siegemund.
Siegemund is a wild card entry at this year’s tournament. The German beat qualifier Mona Barthel in the first round. Siegemund, 33, who won the Stuttgart tournament in 2017 and reached the 2016 final, needed just over two hours to seal a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 first-round win over Barthel.
