“Things have gotten twisted up!” Sue Bird gets real on Caitlin Clark ‘hate’ from WNBA players
The narrative going around in the sporting world was that the WNBA players hated Caitlin Clark.
WNBA legend Sue Bird clears the narrative of players hating on Indiana Fever superstar Caitlin Clark
As of now, the narrative that WNBA players do not like Caitlin Clark has cooled down. However, that was the raging discussion on everyone’s lips ever since the season started. Therefore, when the legend of the game, Sue Bird, was on a show, it was natural for the host to ask her about her opinion on this matter.
Sue Bird was a guest on FanDuel TV’s podcast, Cousin Sal’s Winning Weekend. There, the host asked her if the narratives were hyped or misunderstood. Bird disputed all the rumors surrounding the WNBA. She claimed some of the statements were twisted to fit a particular agenda.
Obviously, I’m assuming Diana (Taurasi) saying that ‘rookies are going to need to adjust.’ Somehow, that got twisted and turned around and now has taken on a life of its own. And there’s this narrative that WNBA players are hating on Caitlin or don’t like her. That’s not the case. So I think things have gotten really twisted up.Sue Bird via Cousin Sal’s Winning Weekend
Sue Bird came to the defense of the WNBA. Most of the narratives surrounding Caitlin Clark were based on the fact that WNBA players did not sound pleased with all the attention she received. One analyst went on to suggest that her massive endorsement deals could also lead to jealousy.
However, Caitlin Clark found support from unconventional quarters. LeBron James and Charles Barkley called out players for being petty against the one person who was about to transform the league’s fortunes. Even though some incidents suggest they were right, it seems not everyone feels that way.
WNBA players showing support to Caitlin Clark
In her previous game against the Las Vegas Aces, one instance captured on camera showed the good side of WNBA players. As the rookie dribbled towards the interior, she lost her footing and slipped onto the floor. When Aces superstar Jackie Young noticed Caitlin Clark paused to catch her breath, the veteran signaled to the referee that she needed to fix her laces.
She untied the laces on her left shoe and then tied them up, but she continued to do the same on her right shoe. All that gave Clark time to gather herself. Young even asked her if Clark was alright. Then, Clark fixed her laces to thank Young for her gesture.
Other than this example, WNBA greats Diana Taurasi and Brittney Griner showed Clark their appreciation before the game. These situations show that Sue Bird was right. Maybe it was isolated instances blowing up at the wrong time.
