As the Tokyo Paralympics are underway, India has sent its largest ever contingent of athletes in the hopes of having its most successful Paralympics yet. Para Badminton will be making its debut at the Paralympics this year, and India’s squad of 7 para shuttlers will be looking to finish on the podium. Among these is Suhas Lalinakere Yathiraj, who will be competing in the men’s singles category.

Yathiraj was born in Hassan, Karnataka on 2nd July 1983. He currently resides in Gautam Buddha Nagar, Uttar Pradesh.

The 38-year-old Suhas has an impairment in his ankle, but has never viewed it as a disadvantage. He gives credit to his parents, Yathiraj L K(late) and Jayashree C S for pushing him to be successful and reach where he is today. He also has a sibling Sharath LY. In December 2016, Suhas received Uttar Pradesh’s highest civilian honour, Yash Bharati award.

Suhas has been working as an IAS officer since 2007, and has been working in Uttar Pradesh. Currently world no. 3, Yathiraj enjoys working as a software engineer and has worked in Bengaluru, Bangkok and Germany.

Suhas is married to Ritu Suhas, the Mrs. UP in the Mrs. India 2019 contest. She is currently a PCS officer assigned as an Additional Municipal Commissioner in Allahabad. They have a daughter Saanvi who is 5 years old, and a son Vivaan who is 2 years old.

Yathiraj took his first international medal in 2016 at the Asian Championships, stunning the world and taking home the gold medal in men’s singles. He took home two gold medals at the 2017 Turkish Open BWF Para Badminton Championships in 2017 in the men’s singles and men’s doubles category.

In the same year he also took home a silver and a bronze medal at the Japan Open in the men’s singles and men’s doubles category respectively. Suhas also took home a silver medal at the 2018 Turkish Open Para Badminton Championships in Men’s singles.

2019 saw Yathiraj pick up an impressive 10 medals at Open Para World Championships, including 1 gold, 4 silver and 5 bronze. He picked up the sole gold medal at the 2019 BWF Turkish Open Para Badminton World Championships.
