Indian tennis player Sumit Nagal‘s story has been nothing short of a ‘rags to riches’ kind. The 26-year-old has seen the toughest of times in the past few months but is also enjoying success at the highest level.

While the Indian tennis player had confessed to having only 900 pound dollars in his account a few months ago, Nagal reached the second round at the Monte Carlo Masters on Monday.

The 26-year-old tennis star defeated Matteo Arnaldi in the opening-round match to script history. Despite losing the first set 5-7, Nagal maintained his composure to win the match in three sets. The Indian No. 1 singles player beat the World No. 38 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 to advance to the next round.

With this win, Sumit Nagal made history as the first Indian player to win a singles match on clay since 1990. The 26-year-old earned heaps of praise for his win. Not just the win in Monte Carlo, but the entire turnaround seemed to inspire the tennis fans. 

A renowned tennis journalist hailed the Indian tennis player as he recalled Nagal’s struggles for survival a few months ago. He highlighted how the Indian tennis player is pushing against all the odds to stay afloat. 

5 months ago, Sumit Nagal admitted that he had only 900 € in his bank account. He was the N138 in the world and had to play Challengers to earn points and money. Today, in the middle of April, he is already experiencing the best season of his life at 26 years old. He has accumulated earnings of 230,000 euros and will leave Monte Carlo among the 80 best in the world, with the best Ranking of his career.
