Darius Slay is taking a practical approach in regard to his future with the Super Bowl LIX champions, the Philadelphia Eagles. While entering the final year of his contract, the veteran cornerback knows there’s a good possibility that it could be his last season, and if that case, there’s only team he would like to return.

Appearing on the Amon-Ra St. Brown’s podcast, the St. Brown, Slay opened up about his future in the league. Since retirement still remains in a distant future for him, he realizes that Philly might prefer freeing the cap space for young stars. With that possibility, the 34-year-old would prefer returning to his original team, the Detroit Lions; instead of joining a new one.

I got one more [year left on the deal. But you know how that works. Whatever they want to do. I might re-sign back, hopefully. If I ain’t, I gotta see what we doing because I do want to play one more year, for sure.

Despite winning a Super Bowl ring with the Eagles, the Lions have always remained as “second home” to Slay. That’s why, even after parting with them, he still welcomes young players coming to him for training at camps and workouts which always makes him nostalgic about the time he was one of those young players.

Darius Slay maintains Philadelphia as his top choice for next season while revealing love for Detroit

Upon hearing the six-time Pro Bowler expressing his lasting love for Detroit, host St. Brown– who plays for the Lions as a wide receiver, confirmed if Slay wants to return to the Lions since his words clearly reflect his feelings. However, he clarified that Philly is definitely his first preference but if the franchise decides to release him, the Lions are the team for him.

If it is, it is. If it ain’t, it ain’t. For sure the two spots I would love to always be at is Philly or Detroit. The main two, the main ones I’d love to be at,” said Slay.

After seven seasons with the Lions, the franchise traded Slay to the Eagles following the 2019 campaign. At that time, Slay was seeking a new contract deserving of his contribution to the team, however, Detroit could not agree to his satisfaction, leaving no other option but to trade him.
