The Super Bowl proved to be the king of sports once again. Super Bowl LIX shattered all previous records to become the most-watched event in USA television history, according to FOX network and Nielsen data.
Dov Klieman shared an interesting take regarding the viewership of Super Bowl LIX. A chunk of football fans called to boycott the biggest spectacle in sports because serial winners the Kansas City Chiefs qualified for it after defeating the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Championship game.
People grew tired of witnessing the Chiefs lift three Lombardi Trophies in five years and hoped to see a different team qualify from the AFC. Most were up in arms, pointing to controversial calls leading to the departure of the Bills from the running.
Even though popular faces such as Taylor Swift, Jay Z, Serena Williams, Kendrick Lamar, and Lionel Messi weren’t enough to sway people’s hearts. There was still hope that Donald Trump would draw the world’s attention because it was the first time a sitting president sat in the stadium to watch the Super Bowl.
People tuned in through the various streaming apps: Tubi, FUBO TV, DAZN, Telemundo, and FOX Deportes. However, the report showed that the average viewership skyrocketed in the second quarter. There’s a massive reason behind the sudden spike in people’s interest in the game.
Horrible Patrick Mahomes performance might have played a big part in making Super Bowl LIX the most viewed event
The Chiefs were the favorites to defeat the Eagles. Clark Hunt, owner of the Chiefs, even struck a deal with NBA side Miami Heat’s head honcho Pat Riley for the ownership of the phrase ‘three-peat’ to showcase on their merchandise post-Super Bowl victory.

Hunt and the Chiefs quickly had to erase all of those plans from their heads after Mahomes posted arguably the most awful stats of his career. The 29-year-old completed just one first down—threw just over 30 yards and two interceptions (one of them being a pick-six by Eagles corner Cooper DeJean), which resulted in the Chiefs trailing by 24-0 at halftime.
The news of Mahomes’ horror of the first two quarters must have given the football fraternity a reason to tune into the game. It resulted in a peak viewership of 135.7 million near the tail end of the second quarter. The game averaged an estimated 126 million viewers throughout the night.

This number surpassed the previous numbers set during the Super Bowl LVIII fixture between the Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers. At its peak, an average of 127 million people watched as the Chiefs defeated the 49ers on CBS Sports in Glendale, California.
