The Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles are set to face each other at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans in Super Bowl LIX on Sunday, February 9. Patrick Mahomes qualified for his fifth Super Bowl in seven years as the starter for the Chiefs, while it will be Jalen Hurts’ second appearance in football’s biggest game.
Hurts and the Eagles defeated the Washington Commanders in the NFC Championship 55-23. The 26-year-old completed 72% of his passes for 246 yards and threw one touchdown, along with 3 rushing touchdowns. Star running back Saquon Barkley rushed for 118 yards and contributed three touchdowns.
Chiefs head coach Andy Reid gave Barkley the ultimate compliment by naming him the best running back in NFL history.
He’s playing like crazy right now.
Andy Reid said
The Chiefs, on the other hand, needed to dig deep to beat the Bills. They benefited from a couple of bad decisions from Bills quarterback Josh Allen. Mahomes capitalized on the mistakes and scored a rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter to tip the balance in the Chiefs’ favor. The game ended 32-29 with Mahomes contributing three touchdowns and a quarterback rating of 123. Rookie wide receiver Xavier Worthy caught six passes for 85 yards and scored one touchdown.
The Chiefs and the Eagles met each other in Super Bowl 2022. On that occasion, Hurts, and the Eagles suffered a 38-35 defeat despite a late revival. Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni has a score to settle and, in a recent press conference, revealed they have learned from their mistakes.
A couple of tweaks here and there of what we’ll do differently and couple things that will stay the same.

Why can the Kansas City Chiefs win Super Bowl LIX?
Patrick Mahomes is the obvious reason for the Chiefs to be viewed as the favorites to secure a first-ever three-peat. The 2x NFL MVP began the regular season slowly but eventually picked up pace during the business end of the campaign.
Mahomes ended the 2024 regular season with 392 completions for 3928 yards, 26 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions. In the two postseason games, he threw 34 completions for 422 yards and four overall touchdowns.
Running back Kareem Hunt is set to play a big part in the game. Hunt was brought back to the team in the off-season to cover for injured Isiah Pacheco; since then recorded 728 yards and 8 touchdowns in 13 games, sharing time with Samaje Perine. Xavier Worthy repaid the Chiefs back for showing faith in him. Whether as a speedy receiver or as a motion man, the Texas graduate excelled at both. Worthy caught 59 passes for 638 yards and scored 9 overall touchdowns.
Why can the Philadelphia Eagles win Super Bowl LIX?
Hurts silenced his doubters with brilliant regular season numbers. The 2x Pro Bowler completed 248 passes (69% completion) for 2903 yards, 18 touchdowns, and 5 interceptions. He also added 14 rushing touchdowns from 150 tries. Hurts has been clutch in the playoffs, throwing 48 completions for 505 yards and 7 overall touchdowns from three games.
However, as coach Reid mentioned, the Chiefs need to be wary of Saquon Barkley, who was named the FOX Sports Offensive Player of the Year. Barkley, in 16 games, shattered the Eagles’ rushing attempts and yards record with 345 for 2005 and scored a total of 15 touchdowns in the regular season. Barkley performed at the same level in the three postseason games as well, contributing 442 yards and five rushing touchdowns.
The Chiefs and the Eagles have met just 10 times in the NFL and share a 5-5 record. Mahomes and Hurts played against each other twice in the past and have a record of 1-1.
