Suresh Raina confirms return for IPL 2021, set to feature in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy

One of the Indian Premier League‘s (IPL) most decorated players Suresh Raina is set to return for the 2021 season. Raina is second on the list of all-time high scorers of the list. But was not part of the 13th season of the cash-rich league. Raina travelled to UAE with Chennai Super Kings, his franchise. But returned before the league kicked off owning to personal reasons.
Raina announced his retirement earlier this year. And speculations surfaced around his playing days after he pulled out of IPL 2020. Speaking to Dainik Jagran, Raina announced that he will be leading Uttar Pradesh in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy this season. Furthermore, the former India batsman went on to confirm his participation in IPL 2021. A regular feature in UP’s white-ball sides, Raina had led the state team to a title victory in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2015/16.
BCCI yet to announce domestic schedule
The Board for Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) is yet to make an official declaration regarding the domestic season. Reports suggest that the governing body is planning a curtailed season. A final word is expected from the BCCI after its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on December 24. The board hopes to kick off the season next month. Should it only host white-ball matches, the season might get over in February. But if the BCCI hosts Ranji Trophy as well, the season might extend till March.
According to reports, he proposed window for the competitions are January 11 to March 18 for the Ranji Trophy, December 20 to January 10 for the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy is to be organised from January 11 to February 7. The governing body’s main agenda, at the moment, seems to be to organise the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy ahead of the upcoming IPL auction.
As far as IPL 2021 is concerned, it is likely to take place in April and May. The BCCI hopes to stage the league in India but it will only be possible if the situation remains under control.
