A day after guiding India to the 2025 Asia Cup title, captain Suryakumar Yadav accused ACC chief Mohsin Naqvi of ‘running away’ with the trophy in order to deny the Indian team its much-deserved prize. A bizarre controversy erupted after the final, as the winning team celebrated without a trophy.
India and Pakistan faced each other for the third time in the same tournament in the final of the 2025 Asia Cup. Like the previous encounters, the Men in Blue once again triumphed over their rivals. India successfully chased down a tricky 147-run target in 19.4 overs, thanks to a match-winning knock of 69 runs off 53 deliveries from Tilak Varma. Sanju Samson and Shivam Dube also supported the chase with crucial contributions.
Drama followed thereafter, with the Indian team continuing to refuse interacting with Pakistani players at the 2025 Asia Cup. At the post-match presentation ceremony, after an hour-long delay, presenter Simon Doull announced that the ceremony had abruptly concluded, after the victorious Indian team refused to accept the Asia Cup trophy from ACC chief Mohsin Naqvi, who also serves as the chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) and the interior minister of Pakistan.
Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav noted that his players waited for nearly an hour on the ground after they refused to receive the winners’ medals and trophy from Naqvi. Yadav confirmed that the team had agreed to accept the trophy from Emirates Cricket Board (ECB) vice-chairman Khalid Al-Zarooni, who was present on the podium, but ultimately blamed Mohsin Naqvi for refusing to nudge.
Suryakumar Yadav said – "We didn’t close the door and stay inside the dressing room. We didn’t make anyone wait for the presentation ceremony. (Trophy leke bhag gaya) They ran away with the trophy that’s what I saw. I’m not sure, some people were recording us, but we were just… pic.twitter.com/BfPhMorhzW

Suryakumar Yadav exclaimed that he saw the ACC chief and a representative ‘run away’ with the trophy even before the presentation ceremony was over, while the Indian team was on the ground. He added that the Indian team was not at fault for the delay or the controversy, as the players were waiting till the end and had not gone back inside the dressing room.
All of it subsequently resulted in the Indian team celebrating without the silverware. Yadav spoke to The Indian Express, saying:
We didn’t close the door and sit inside the dressing room. We didn’t make anyone wait for the presentation ceremony. Trophy leke bhaag gaye woh [They ran away with the trophy].
To conclude, Yadav also dismissed claims that the BCCI had instructed the team to not take the trophy from Mohsin Naqvi. The 35-year-old instead admitted that it was the decision that was taken by the players and the management at the moment, on the ground itself.
Suryakumar Yadav Might Face the Axe For Australia Tour Following Dismal 2025 Asia Cup Campaign
Former India opener K. Srikkanth expressed his agony over Indian T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav’s dismal form with the bat, at the recently concluded 2025 Asia Cup. Srikkanth’s assessment puts the 35-year-old’s spot in the Indian team for the upcoming Australia tour in jeopardy.

Suryakumar Yadav could only manage to score 71 runs in six matches at the Asia Cup, at a poor strike-rate of just 107.57, putting him even behind the top-15 run-getters. The Mumbai-batter could not score runs even when it was most necessary, scoring just a run in the final against Pakistan, before he was dismissed by Shaheen Afridi. He only crossed the 20-run mark once, throughout the 2025 Asia Cup.
In 11 T20I innings this year, Suryakumar Yadav’s numbers have been abysmally low, with the captain having scraped together only 100 runs at an average below ten. All of it prompted Kris Srikkanth to make a harsh assessment about the Indian T20I captain’s future, suggesting that he has let him down and that Yadav’s performances have become a ‘pin-code’ in the recent days, both alarming and concerning.
In case the selectors lose faith in Yadav’s abilities to lead the team in the upcoming white-ball tour to Australia, he might even find himself out of the playing XI. In-form Shreyas Iyer could easily slot in as India’s new number three, in the T20I lineup.
