Suryakumar Yadav led the Indian T20I team to an emphatic nine-wicket win over UAE in their first 2025 Asia Cup match, also etching his name in record books as the country’s most successful T20I captain. Yadav now ranks ahead of legends like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and MS Dhoni, with a higher win percentage.
A late bloomer, Suryakumar Yadav made his international debut at the age of 30 in a T20I against England in March 2021. Since then, the Mumbai-born batter has made a name for himself in the shortest format of the game. He has scored over 2,600 runs in just 84 matches, at an average of 38.30, hitting four hundreds and 21 fifties. It quickly propelled him to the third spot on India’s all-time T20I run-getters list.
A limited-overs specialist, Suryakumar Yadav held the top spot in the ICC Men’s T20I Batter Rankings from 2022 to 2024, and was also named the ICC T20I Player of the Year twice. The 34-year-old was a pivotal part of the Men in Blues’ 2024 ICC T20 World Cup-winning campaign. Following Rohit Sharma‘s retirement from the format in June 2024, Yadav was chosen as India’s new T20I captain, despite Hardik Pandya being a fan favorite for the role.
Suryakumar Yadav has led the Indian T20I team to victory in every series since 2024. His first assignment was a five-match T20I series against Australia in December 2023, where he filled in for the absent Rohit Sharma. Once appointed as the full-time T20I captain, ‘Sky’ led India to series victories over Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, South Africa, and England, a streak he is now continuing in the 2025 Asia Cup.
The win against UAE in the Asia Cup has made him India’s most successful shortest-format skipper. In the 23 matches that he has led the team, the Men in Blue have won 19, and lost only four. This gives Suryakumar Yadav an incredible win rate of 81.25 percent, which places him significantly ahead of other Indian T20I captains, including Rohit Sharma (79.03 percent), Virat Kohli (66.67 percent), and MS Dhoni (56.94 percent).

Suryakumar Yadav Reflects on India’s Dominant Show Against UAE In Asia Cup Opener
Team India captain Suryakumar Yadav described his side’s performance in the 2025 Asia Cup opener against UAE as ‘clinical’ and praised the players’ energy and execution. India defeated the hosts by a commanding margin of nine wickets, in a match that only lasted 17.4 overs in total.

UAE, put to bat first, were bowled out for just 57 runs, with Kuldeep Yadav and Shivam Dube emerging on top for India. Kuldeep finished with impressive figures of 4/7, while Dube picked three wickets in his two overs. In response, the Indian team cruised to the 58-run target in just 4.3 overs, with Abhishek Sharma hitting a quick-fire 30 off 16 balls, while Shubman Gill scored 20 off nine balls.
In his post-match comments, Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav explained that he chose to bowl first because he anticipated the Dubai pitch would slow down and assist the spinners. While praising his team’s dominant performance and strong start, he gave credit to Kuldeep Yadav for excelling under tough conditions, also and noted his team’s aggressive batting in the second innings.
The Men in Blue next face their biggest challenge in the 2025 Asia Cup, when they take on arch-rivals Pakistan on September 14, in Dubai. The two sides will meet each other for the first since the 2025 Champions Trophy clash, which India won by six wickets.
