Indian T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav shared an encouraging update about countryman Shreyas Iyer’s health, after the latter suffered a life-threatening injury during the team’s third ODI against Australia in Sydney. Yadav informed about the improvement in Iyer’s health condition.

The Men in Blue faced a major injury scare after Shreyas Iyer injured himself while fielding during the third and final ODI of the three-match series against Australia. He had landed awkwardly on his chest while taking Alex Carey‘s catch at backward point. Iyer then struggled to get back on his feet. The medical staff had to immediately rush onto the pitch to tend to Iyer’s injury, and carry him off the pitch.

While it was initially perceived that Iyer might have only suffered a bruise, BCCI later confirmed that the 30-year-old had suffered a laceration injury to his spleen, which is a vital organ below the left rib cage. He had to be rushed to a Sydney hospital from the pitch, and was also moved to the ICU after the injury was deemed ‘serious’ by doctors due to internal bleeding. Iyer has now been shifted to a private room, with his condition improved.

Ahead of the T20I series between India and Australia, Suryakumar Yadav provided an update on Shreyas Iyer’s health, stating that Iyer is stable and that he has been in touch with members of the team as well as his family, replying to messages about his health. Yadav also exclaimed that he had a conversation with the Indian team physio Kamlesh Jain, who confirmed the positive update about Iyer’s health. Yadav told the reporters:

When I got to know that he [Shreyas Iyer] was injured, I called him. I called the physio and he told me that he was stable… I have been talking to him over the last two days and he has been replying on phone.

Furthermore, Yadav added that Iyer is expected to remain under medical supervision for the coming days, but he remains completely ‘out of risk’. The 35-year-old also revealed how the team had first thought that Iyer’s injury was a normal one, before realizing its severity in the dressing room. He however, was unable to provide an update on how long the batter would take to recover.

He [Shreyas Iyer] is looking good, the doctors are with him. But he will be under supervision for the next few days. But he has been replying, so that is good.

Iyer might not be back in action for the Men in Blue until the end of the year, with him set to miss around three months of action. A spleen injury usually takes around six to twelve weeks to heal, with doctors advising against any form of physical activity until then.

India vs. Australia T20I series: Suryakumar Yadav-led squad eyes revenge after ODI series defeat

Suryakumar Yadav is all prepared to lead the Men in Blue in the opening T20I of the five-match series against Australia at the Manuka Oval in Canberra. India will be aiming to seal the series by a comfortable margin, while also hoping to also extract revenge for the 1-2 ODI series loss.

Yadav & Co. come off the back of an impressive form, having most recently won the 2025 Asia Cup. India, currently ranked as the no.1 T20I team, established its dominance after thrashing teams like Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in the Asia Cup. However, they do face a tough challenge against a resurgent Australian side, which backs heavily on established names as well as young players.

The Indian T20I team boasts a stellar record against Australia in the shortest format, unlike Tests and ODIs. India has won 20 out of the 32 matches it has played against the Aussies, while losing only 11. Furthermore, the Men in Blue have also won the last three T20I series they have played against Australia, including a record 4-1 victory over the opponents during the 2023-24 five-match series at home.

India will field a much-similar XI for the opening match in Canberra, with Abhishek Sharma and Shubman Gill to start as opener, with Suryakumar Yadav, Tilak Varma, Sanju Samson, Shivam Dube to follow. Nitish Kumar Reddy, Axar Patel, Jasprit Bumrah, Arshdeep Singh and Kuldeep Yadav will be next.
