Sanju Samson created history in Durban after he became the fourth batter to smash consecutive T20I hundreds. He also became the first Indian batter to achieve this feat as Team India completed a comprehensive victory against South Africa by 61 runs. Proteas captain Aiden Markram won the toss and asked India to bat first.
Samson, while opening, carried his form from the last T20I against Bangladesh as he scored 107 runs off 50 deliveries with his innings laced with seven fours and 10 sixes. India’s T20I skipper, Suryakumar Yadav, heaped praise on the batter at the post-match presentation.
SKY said that Samson has worked very hard in the last few years, and he is now reaping the benefits of it. Yadav commended Samson’s approach of taking risks even when he was in his 90s, which showed that he was playing for his team and not his personal milestones.
Samson became the joint Indian batter with Rohit Sharma to smash the most sixes in a T20I innings. He has been inconsistent with his form throughout these years and hence has been in and out of the team. However, India’s new head coach, Gautam Gambhir, has shown faith in him and asked him to open the innings for India in T20Is. Samson has finally found his mojo with the faith shown in him at the top of the order.
Suryakumar Yadav was unaware of India’s dominant record in T20Is in Durban
With this win, India extended their unbeaten streak of not losing a single T20I match in Durban. When Yadav was asked about this dominant record of India in the post-match presentation, he said that he was not aware of it and got to know it during the presentation itself. However, he did talk about the aggressive brand of cricket that India have been playing in the last three-four T20I series and how they have stuck to it.
Riding on Samson’s second T20I century, India posted 202 runs for the loss of eight wickets in their 20 overs. The captain scored 21 runs off 17 balls, and Tilak Varma played a great cameo of 33 runs off 18 deliveries.
In reply, the bowlers dismissed the Proteas for 141 runs in 17.5 overs. Varun Chakravarthy and Ravi Bishnoi scalped three wickets each. Avesh Khan picked up two wickets, and Arshdeep Singh picked up one wicket. India now leads the four-match T20I series by a margin of 1-0.
