More backlash for Lia Thomas as Arizona Swimmers write letter in protest of win to NCAA

Lia Thomas

Last week’s NCAA swimming championships ended in quite the controversy as transgender athlete Lia Thomas took home the gold medal in the women’s 500 yard freestyle event. She also swam in two other championship finals, and none garnered any support from the audience.

Thomas was denounced by many, including former Olympian Caitlyn Jenner as well as Florida governor Ron DiSantis. Members of the swimming community are not pleased either, as many continue to write letters about the controversial inclusion of Thomas, citing an unfair advantage because she is transgender.

The latest letter comes from Arizona University’s group of swimmers, including head coach Frank Busch as well as 2008 Beijing Olympian Lacy Nymeyer and others from the Wildcats’ 2008 national championship group.

The letter was sent to the governing body of the NCAA just last week, and it speaks out against the win of Lia Thomas at the Championships. The letter questions the fairness of Thomas’ participation in the event itself, citing an unfair advantage. The letter goes on to say that the NCAA has successfully failed everyone, allowing Thomas to compete against cisgender women while trying to appease everyone.

The letter also notes that this has put the University in the top 20 program, after they failed to even score a point last year. The letter ends with an request to the NCAA in discussing potential steps it can implement to create new solutions for the expanding athletic family.
