“I am OK and healthy!”: Anita Alvarez expresses gratitude after coach rescues her from drowning at World Aquatic Championships

The 2022 FINA World Aquatics Championships in Hungary ended in quite the nightmare for Anita Alvarez, who was needed to be rescued by her coach after she almost drowned due to loss of consciousness. Her coach Andrea Fuentes had to take quick action and jump in the water when Alvarez began to go down at the end of her women’s free solo routine instead of coming up.

This was reportedly the second time that Alvarez has had to be rescued from the pool, as she also needed help during last year’s Olympic qualification event. Alvarez was then treated by the medical team, after which she was reported to be in good health. She will take rest for a few days before deciding with the doctors whether she can continue to perform soon after.

After the incident and back on the mend, Anita Alvarez posted a quick update on her recovery. “Thank you everyone, will give a brief update soon. But in the meantime know that I am OK and healthy!” she said according to mirror.co.uk. “I appreciate all of the messages and hope everyone can respect that my team and I still have 2 more days of competition to be focused on here in Budapest. (Whether that is in the water for me or on the sidelines by myself and expert medical staff.)”

Alvarez remembers that during the performance she was feeling great. But just as she was done, she felt something was wrong, and things went downhill from there. However, she was extremely grateful to have a coach like Feuntes. “I mean I say this all the time to her and to other people, [I’m] just so grateful to have her as a coach.”
