Olympic Champion and star swimmer Michael Phelps gives full credit to his wife Nicole Johnson for keeping his head above water through his mental health struggles.

“For 15 years, Nicole has seen me go up and down. There’s no other person that would be able to support me like she has. She’s the glue that holds all of us together,” said Phelps about his wife according to eonline.com. The 36-year-old said that his mental health shifts on a day to day basis. One day he could get up and feel at the top of the world, and the next day he could not want to get out of bed.

Nicole, who shares two kids with Phelps, makes sure that the children know how their father is feeling so that they can make his day better.

Nicole said that she makes sure that her children know when their father needs space. “I’m very vocal and making sure that the kids are aware that maybe Michael’s having a rough day and that [they] didn’t do something that made daddy feel this way,” she said. “It’s daddy having his own stuff.”

Michael Phelps also said that Nicole helps him gain understanding through support and books and quotes that will help him cope with his childhood trauma. “I keep reminding Michael that I’m not here to judge him. I’m here to support him. I’m here to love him. I’m not going to shame him. I’m not going to say you can’t feel that way. But just making sure I’m there.”
