Once a parent, always a parent. Maybe this was the same case with Michael Phelps’ father Fred, as he felt left out of his son’s gigantic accomplishments. It’s true that Michael’s parents divorced when he was only 9 years old, but the child without a father found the image of the missing parent in his coach Bob Bowman.

But this may have left Fred in a place where he found himself lonely. Michael Phelps may be the great Olympian and a legendary swimmer, but his road to success wasn’t all flowery. His mother raised him along with his two sisters. His sisters played a great role in his life as he pursued to be a swimmer.

Michael Phelps admitted that it was his sisters who encouraged him to get started with the national swimming organization in hopes to get better. The young kid instantly took a liking to water and the rest is known to all! He quickly rose to fame. 

And on this journey, he steadily held the hands of his mother and his sisters. But his father, Fred noted, “Just because he lives with Debbie doesn’t mean I didn’t have anything to do with this.” “It’s like I didn’t exist.”, “It’s his story.” Continuing further, he says, “It’s not Debbie’s story. It’s not my story.”

Fred, a former football player noted his emotions with the Baltimore Sun in 2001. Though Fred may have felt hurt by these emotions, he still raised Michael’s mother Debbie for raising their son so well. Michael created a special bond with Bob which continues till now.

It’s just not a regular student-teacher relationship, but something deeper. In Bob, Michael found his lost dad. He stated, “He is my dad. Like, I didn’t always have a dad growing up”. Michael always emphasized the impact Bob left on him. He lastly quoted, “I still learn a lot from him”.
