“You’ve already tapped into being a man”: NBA Guard Gilbert Arenas goes against Lia Thomas, agrees with Caitlyn Jenner

Lia Thomas‘ controversial win at the NCAA Swimming Championships has been the talk of the town over the last few months. Several athletes, celebrities and individuals have come forward to voice their opinions, for or against the case. Gilbert Arenas seems to voice the same opinion as former Olympian Caitlyn Jenner, who is against the athlete.

Former Olympic athlete Caitlyn Jenner has denied a win to a transgender athlete in the US College Swimming Championships. The athlete, Lia Thomas, took a dominant victory in the 500 yard freestyle event over Olympic silver medallist Emma Weyant by over one and a half seconds. “This is a question of fairness. That’s why I oppose biological boys who are trans competing in girls’ sports in school. It just isn’t fair, and we have to protect girls’ sports in our schools,” she said.

Basketball player Gilbert Arenas feels the same, and that trans individuals should not be allowed to compete in sports, and he gives his reasons as to why.

Gilbert Arenas feels transgender athletes need to chart their level of competition growing up in the sport

Arenas feels that college level is too late for transgender athletes to compete in sports. He said that at that point Thomas had already been competing and practicing against men, and she had tapped into being a man- what she naturally is, inside. “That’s like a man who has been learning to box against men, and then goes ahead and says ‘oh, now I want to box against women’,” said Arenas.

Arenas feels like the rules apply on a case by case basis, especially differing for certain sports. He said, “If you participate in male sports, then you cannot participate in female sports. You can’t train as a male athlete till your 20 and then jump into female sports.” He feels like this should be a strong reinforcement of rules by the governing committees put into place.
