Russian swimmer Evgeny Rylov banned for 9 months after attending pro-war rally

Russian Olympic swimmer Evgeny Rylov has been suspended for nine months by FINA, the governing swimming body, after attending a pro war rally. Rylov won the 100m and 200m backstroke Gold medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.
The 25-year-old was one of the several athletes who attended the rally hosted by Putin at the Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium in March. The rally pertained to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and the war that came along with it. All people wore a pro war symbol “Z” on their clothing.
Speedo terminates sponsorship deal with Evgeny Rylov

FINA said that Rylov had been banned “from all competitions and activities organized or sanctioned by Fina” following his “attendance and conduct” at the event. His suspension recently took effect from 20th April. However, since all Russian and Belarusian athletes have been banned from competing till the end of the year, Rylov’s suspension will only effectively last for 20 days.
His suspension will end on 20 January 2023. After the scandal pertaining the rally took place, big brand Speedo also terminated their sponsorship with the athlete.
