Swiss Open 2021: Sindhu survives Thai scare, Marin eases into semi-finals
PV Sindhu and Carolina Marin ease into second round
In the women’s singles quarterfinal, Mia Blichfeldt of Denmark had a comfortable win against the Thai Youngster P Chaiwan. In a match that lasted 31 minutes, the Danish Mia breezed past Chaiwan 21-10, 21-7 with a commanding game. She will now play the semi-final tomorrow against PV Sindhu.
Sindhu survives Thai scare
PV Sindhu, India’s golden girl fought her way to the semi-finals beating Busanan Ongbumrungbhan of Thailand in straight-set lasting 59 minutes. The first game was a comfortable win. However, the Thai was on Sindhu’s nerves, clawing back level time and again, making Sindhu work very hard. The match went in Sindhu’s favor 21-16, 23-21. She will next face Mia Blichfeldt in the semi-finals.
Marin registers a comfortable win
First seed Carolina Marin defeated Beiwen Zhang of the USA. It took the Rio Olympic Champion 34 minutes to defeat Zhang 21-13, 21-13 comfortable without stretching herself. Marin has been in absolutely stunning form making it into three consecutive finals in three weeks in the Asian leg and winning two consecutive titles. It will be exciting to watch her play yet again.
It was a good day for Thailand to have three players in the quarterfinal of the women’s singles category. Pornpawee Chochuwong, the third seed at Basel pulled off a victory against Line Christophersen of Denmark. Chochowong who had made it to the BWF World Tour finals 2020 and registered major upsets, eased past Line of Denmark, 21-11, 21-15 in just 30 minutes. She will now play Carolina Marin in the semi-final.
