Sydney Sweeney might be gearing up to play boxing Hall of Famer Christy Martin on reel. However, the AACTA Awards, People’s choice, and Primetime Emmy winning actress also had one other name in mind. Her favorite is someone she has trained with before, who is the WMMA pioneer Ronda Rousey.

In a self-proclaimed bad flirting attempt with Sydney Sweeney, Kyle Forgeard of the Nelk Boys broke ice by asking her favorite UFC fighter. Forgeard has his own history with the combat clique and cultures; he is friends with Dana White after all. They often train in fighter skits and even flew UFC ally Donald Trump a few times. Hence, UFC was his go-to topic for Sweeney; she named Ronda Rousey for it.

I mean, …I’ve always been a fan of Ronda, I actually got to hang out with Ronda and then go to lunch with her. That was fu*king crazy…She really did [put women’s MMA on the map]…

Ronda Rousey was the first female name on the UFC 157 card. Rousey later also became the first women’s bantamweight and logged the most UFC title defenses (6). Her deep-seated impact is something that many global MMA outlets and analysts refer to even today. Rousey’s impact on women’s MMA has been so deep that the biggest up-and-coming prospects often see power scaling with her.

The Riverside, California martial artist remains a larger than life role for anyone. Too bad for Sweeney, Rousey has had her own foray into acting, and a good one at that. She brought her MMA/UFC side of things into the talent in multiple action flicks. Some movies have also seen her play it close to home as an MMA fighter. Sweeney, though, has her own assignment and it’s on the boxing side of the pasture.

Combat sports movies are always the hot sauce of Hollywood, with directors at the helm seeing what stylistic project they can come up with. Boxing itself is always a good avenue. The Rocky and Creed franchise (which had actual boxer cameos) showed good interest into the topic.

Sydney Sweeney, one of Hollywood’s newest “it” starlets, has taken audiences by storm. Her breakthrough edgy stint on Euphoria was something. She had previously produced and starred in the psychological horror film Immaculate.

Sweeney initially auditioned for the project back in 2014. A few years later, she bought the rights to the script and hired her frequent collaborator Michael Mohan to direct. Now, she has wanted to expand her portfolio and dazzle the crowds with more meaningful and challenging stints.

The next role takes her into the life of boxing HOF Christy Martin. Martin compiled a record of 49-7-3 with 31 knockouts and was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2020. The as-yet-untitled biopic is being directed by Australian David Michod, who helmed the acclaimed and Oscar-nominated Animal Kingdom.

Michod co-wrote the Christy Martin drama and is producing it with Sweeney. The film stars Ben Foster, Merritt Weaver, and Ethan Embry. The film will follow ‘The Fire Inside,’ a biopic about boxing’s GWOAT Claressa Shields, and is up for a 2025 release.
