From a promising young star to a perennial All-Star and MVP candidate, Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum has lived up to his billing as a future NBA superstar and blossomed into one of the league’s finest players. He was born on March 3rd, 1998 in St. Louis, Missouri. He is also the cousin of former NBA player and current head coach Tyronn Lue. Tatum has averaged close to 23 points, 6.8 assists, 4.4 rebounds, and 1.1 steals during his NBA career. He has also represented Team USA in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

A five-star recruit out of college, Jayson Tatum spent the 2016-17 NCAA basketball season at Duke University. He starred during the team’s run to the ACC Tournament title. He declared for the 2017 NBA draft and was expected to be a lottery pick. The Celtics, who owned the first overall, traded down to third and still managed to land Tatum. He played 80 games and averaged 13.9 points, five rebounds, 1.6 assists, and 1 steal in his rookie year. He was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team.

Jayson Tatum has won one NBA Championship in his career so far. He led the Boston Celtics to a 4-1 series victory over the Dallas Mavericks in the 2023-24 NBA Finals. He averaged 22.2 points, 7.8 rebounds and 7.2 assists in five games in their title deciding series.
Since drafting Tatum, the Boston Celtics have made it to the playoffs each season. In his rookie year, Tatum averaged 18.5 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game during the Celtics’ run to the Eastern Conference Finals, where they were beaten 4-3 by the LeBron James-led Cleveland Cavaliers. Tatum and the Celtics reached the Eastern Conference Finals again during the 2019-20 season but were beaten 4-2 by the Miami Heat. Boston got its revenge on Miami during the 2021-22 playoffs, as they beat them 4-3 in the ECF to advance to the NBA Finals. However, the Celtics couldn’t get past Stephen Curry and the Golden State Warriors, who beat them 4-2 and won the NBA title.
