Iga Swiatek was provisionally suspended for failing a drug test, from 12 September to October 4, and she missed three tournaments, the Korea Open, the China Open, and the Wuhan Open. Tara Moore, who faced a 19-month suspension for a similar case, questioned why Swiatek was allowed to play the WTA Finals and Billie Jean King Cup Finals.
The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) announced on Thursday (November 28) that a banned substance trimetazidine was found in Swiatek’s sample three days before the Cincinnati Open. After quickly appealing against the suspension, she returned to court for the WTA Finals where she failed to defend her title after getting knocked out of the group stage.
At the Billie Jean King Cup Finals, Poland advanced to the semifinals but lost to eventual champions Italy and Swiatek then wrapped up her season. As Swiatek faced a one-month suspension, which also included her three weeks provisional suspension, she will be serving a ban for a few more days. Moore couldn’t understand why Swiatek was allowed to play while facing the suspension.

Moore was provisionally suspended in May 2022 due to contaminated meat. The suspension was lifted in 2023 after an independent panel found out the reason.
Nicole Pratt thinks Iga Swiatek needs to work on her serve
Iga Swiatek, though she couldn’t win a tour-level title since her fourth French Open, is the most successful women’s player in 2024. The French Open was one of the five titles she has won this season. Former player Nicole Pratt pointed out one area in Swiatek’s game that she needs to improve.
Apart from the five WTA titles, the 23-year-old also won the bronze medal at the Paris Olympics. Because she missed the mandatory tournaments due to the doping case, it affected her rankings and Aryna Sabalenka dethroned her from the top and achieved the year-end No. 1 rankings.
