Ex-Chicago Bears running back Tarik Cohen took a direct attack at Chicago Bears GM Ryan Poles after Detroit Lions extended David Montgomery. Montgomery signed a two-year contract extension with the Lions with two years left in his previous contract.
The Chicago Bears selected Montgomery with the 73rd overall pick in the third round of the NFL Draft. However, in 2023, the Bears decided to part ways with him. Montgomery had expressed that the team’s losing record had drained the fun from playing. Following his departure, the Detroit Lions quickly signed him in free agency, securing him with a three-year contract and now an extension.
Cohen and Montgomery spent a year in Bears together in 2019. Cohen’s time had been ridiculed with injuries, reducing the amount of time they spent together. Cohen retired from the league in the early days of August 2024.
In 2023, Ryan Poles had expressed an interest in retaining Montgomery as part of the team’s rebuilding efforts. However, it unfortunately didn’t align with the financial parameters set by the Bears’ front office.
Ultimately, it also depended on Montgomery’s wish to be a winning team. Detroit Lions seemed a better option at the time—something that they proved. In Montgomery’s first season, Detroit Lions ended their 31-season playoff win drought. They even reached the NFC Conference game where they eventually lost to San Francisco 49ers.
David Montgomery has found a good, new pace with the Lions
Recently, David Montgomery came on to speak about a lot of things. He admitted having suicidal thoughts due to fantasy football pressure in the Up and Adams podcast. However, he also seemed to be in good alignment with the Lions and the new environment amid the pressures.
In a recent media interview availability, Montgomery added that HC Dan Campbell is a player’s coach, denoting a healthy relationship. The chemistry between the players and coaches translates to their success.
Considering how Lions have been having some good fortunes, the news is convincing. Similarly, there’s a good connection between the running backs Montgomery and Jahmyr Gibbs. The duo is the only pair of RBs from a single team in the top 20 rushing leaders despite playing four games.
Montgomery also pointed out the ‘bunch of misfit toys’ mentality. He expressed that he loves how the Lions have embraced the idea. He further pointed that he has a unique bond with Gibbs like “Sonic and Knuckles”. David Montgomery and the Lions are playing the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday chasing their fourth win.
