The first time was so nice, he had to do it twice. On Wednesday, Detroit Tigers ace pitcher Tarik Skubal was crowned the 2025 American League Cy Young Award winner. This marked his second successive Cy Young Award win.
Skubal had a dominating campaign in 2024 and was crowned the unanimous winner. The southpaw ended up winning the Triple Crown last year as he led the leagues in wins (18), strikeouts (228) and had the lowest ERA (2.39).
He started the 2025 season from where he left off the 2024 one. He was once again dominant from the mound and gave the opposition hitters a hard time.
He finished the 2025 campaign with a 13-6 record and 241 strikeouts as the Tigers finished 2nd in the AL Central division. His team suffered a major slump towards the end of the season and slipped up in the division race against the Cleveland Guardians, and blew a 15.5-game lead over them.
Skubal and the Tigers had the last laugh over the Guardians, though. In Game 1 of the American League Wild Card Series, the 28-year-old pitched 7.2 innings and picked up 13 strikeouts. The Tigers won this game and then eliminated the Guardians with a 6-3 win in Game 3.
In the American League Division Series (ALDS) against the Seattle Mariners, Skubal once again delivered for his team. He picked up 9 strikeouts in Game 2 and followed this up with 13 strikeouts in the winners-take-all Game 5. The Tigers, unfortunately, were unable to capitalize on this performance as they ended up as the losers of a 15-inning marathon.
With a 1.74 ERA in the postseason and a 2.21 ERA in the regular season, Skubal was the favorite to win this honor again. He received 26 first-place votes and finished ahead of the Boston Red Sox’s Garrett Crochet to go back-to-back.

Skubal is now the first repeat Cy Young Award winner since Jacob DeGrom in 2018-2019. He is also the first American League pitcher since Hall of Famer Pedro Martinez (1999-2000) to claim this award in two successive seasons.

He is the 12th pitcher in MLB history to repeat as a Cy Young Award winner. On top of that, he is the second Tigers’ star after Denny McLain to win multiple Cy Young Awards with the Detroit-based team. Like Skubal, McLain won his two in successive campaigns in 1968 and 1969.
Tarik Skubal claims he wants to be a Tiger for a long time
In the past few weeks, there has been a lot of speculation regarding the future of Tarik Skubal. Several reports claim that the Detroit Tigers could end up trading away their ace. Following his 2nd successive Cy Young Award win, Skubal commented on this matter and expressed that he wants to be a Tiger for a long time.

According to a report from insider Jon Heyman, there was a $250 million gap between Skubal and the Tigers regarding a new contract. This sparked concern among the Tigers fans.
On the night of his victory, the Tigers’ No.29 addressed the trade buzz. As per Detroit Free Press’ Evan Petzold, Skubal expressed his intentions of staying with the team for a long time.
Contract extension stuff is a little bit different, but trade stuff is out of my control. I’ve given everything I have to this organization. I want to be a Tiger for a very long time. … I love Detroit. Hopefully, I’m here. That’s where I’m at with all of that.

Skubal will become a free agent after the 2026 season if he does not sign a contract extension with the team. He will then be able to explore other options. The Tigers, who have lost some of the best pitchers in the past, do not want that to happen again and will likely try their best to lock down the southpaw for a long time.
