American tennis ace Taylor Fritz was left extremely disappointed as he was at the receiving end of a misjudgment from the chair umpire. During his match against Brandon Nakashima in the first round of the 2024 Cincinnati Masters on Tuesday, Fritz had to replay a point in the second set. This left the American star furious as he called out the chair umpire for his decision.
In the sixth game of the second set, Nakashima hit a big forehand, but the ball landed outside the line. However, Fritz returned the shot, and the rally continued for a couple of more shots before the chair umpire asked the players to stop.
The chair umpire then took help to check if the ball was out. Fritz, meanwhile, looked frustrated as he claimed that the ball was too far out and need not be checked. He engaged in an argument with the chair umpire who blamed the player for not stopping if he felt that the ball was out. Fritz expressed disagreement, saying it was his job to stop the play.
Don't tell me that I need to stop the point when we have electronic line calling. [I would have stopped] if we did not have electronic line calling. The ball was so far out. Why did you not stop it? You are in the chair, you saw the ball, it was a foot out. It's actually ridiculous.Taylor Fritz said while arguing with the chair umpire.
The crowd also started booing after the chair umpire announced that the point would be replayed.
Taylor Fritz takes his fight to social media
After arguing with the chair umpire for a couple of minutes, Taylor Fritz continued with the play, but he was definitely not happy about whatever happened. The American expressed his disappointment and frustration at the incident through a social media post.
Fritz reshared the video, showing his argument with the chair umpire. He then laughed at the chair umpire’s comment about him (Fritz) stopping the point. The 26-year-old also clarified that he was just calling out this decision and was not using this as an excuse for his defeat to Brandon Nakashima.
Imagine telling me I needed to stop the point when we have literal Hawkeye electronic line calling. Side note- I don’t think this changes anything in the match considering I won the point replay so don’t take this as an excuse… just pointing out an insane call.Taylor Fritz wrote on X
While this was an unwarranted incident against Fritz, the American did not do great in the match, either. Fritz lost to unseeded Nakashima in three sets. The World No.12 lost the opening set 4-6 but did come back in the second set, claiming it 6-4. However, Nakashima, who recently upset Tommy Paul, fought it hard in the decider, winning it in the tiebreak.
