Last year’s runner-up and home favorite Taylor Fritz lost in four sets to Novak Djokovic at the 2025 US Open quarterfinal. With this win the 38-year-old extended his perfect head-to-head record to 11-0 over Fritz.
Fritz had several break point opportunities against Djokovic but failed to capitalize on them. Speaking about his frustration following the loss, Fritz stated at the press conference:
The thing is, his level was much higher in the fourth set, although mine too…He made many more errors than he normally does, and as for me, I had all those break opportunities compared to the first sets. In the end, the issue is that I don’t need to play much better for it to happen, that’s what’s frustrating because I had all those chances playing like that…
In the first two sets, Fritz gave up 10 break points against the Serb, particularly due to his many errors, while Djokovic was clutch in crucial moments against the 27-year-old. Though Fritz saved set point at 5-2 in the first set, he failed to convert five break points in the next game, eventually giving away the set to the Serb after a backhand unforced error. Fritz further added:
I need to serve a bit better, not as poorly as in the first two sets. This is one of the things that great players do at the end of the day, which makes them great: they win the important points…That’s exactly what happened; many of my weapons weren’t there at those moments, it was disappointing.”
In the 11th break point opportunity, Fritz finally broke Djokovic and saved set point to level the score 5-5 in the second set, sending the crowd at Arthur Ashe Stadium into a thunderous roar. However, Djokovic quickly broke Fritz back and soon clinched the second set after another backhand unforced error from the American.
The momentum shifted early in the third set when Fritz broke Djokovic with a forehand winner in the fourth game. Djokovic, who seemed visibly irritated, had to deal not just with Fritz’s pressure but also with his opponent’s boisterous home crowd. Fans roared when Djokovic missed first serves, and their agitation increased when he pleaded with the chair umpire for more crowd control.
Fritz sealed the third set with seven aces and 18 winners, facing no break points. The fourth set saw a tight game till 4-4. Djokovic faced no break points this time and went on to seal the win 6-3, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 after Fritz double-faulted on match point. The 24-time Grand Slam champion will next face World No. 2 Carlos Alcaraz in the US Open semifinal.
Taylor Fritz wore ‘Hugo Boss’ headband upside down during the US Open quarterfinal
Taylor Fritz stirred quite a buzz on social media as he wore his ‘Hugo Boss’ headband upside down during his quarterfinal clash against Novak Djokovic at the US Open. He played the first two sets with the headband upside down before going to the dressing room and correcting it. After the match, Fritz even tweeted about the wardrobe malfunction:
Yo why’d nobody tell me that shit was backwards

Fritz has been a brand ambassador for Hugo Boss since March 2024. However, this recent mishap drew hilarious responses from fans, with many speculating that it could put him in bad blood with his sponsors. Even the broadcasting commentators deemed the headband ‘distracting’.

A Grand Slam quarterfinal against arguably one of the greatest athletes of all time served as a primetime advertisement moment for the German fashion company when their logo was upside down. Nonetheless, the mistake has probably generated a great deal of public discussion about the brand.
