Taylor Fritz had inched closer to his first Grand Slam title when he reached the semifinal of this year’s Wimbledon. But he was up against two-time Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz, who clinched the win in four sets.

The win helped the Spaniard improve his head-to-head record over the American ace to 3-0. Fritz is in Toronto for the Canadian Open, and in the pre-tournament press conference, he was asked about the biggest takeaway from that defeat to the five-time Grand Slam champion.

Yeah, I mean, my takeaway from that match is like, I’m obviously…I’m still improving. I played well in that match, but I still believe there are things that I can do better. I think I’m happy with how I played the second set of that match and how I played the fourth set of that match. I think that there are things I could have done better in the first and the third. And I think, yeah, obviously you’re not always going to play perfect.

Before Wimbledon, Fritz had come close to the US Open triumph when he progressed to the championship clash last year. In the final, however, the 27-year-old was no match for World No.1 Jannik Sinner, who secured the win without breaking a sweat.

Alcaraz, after beating Fritz, failed to complete the three-peat at SW19, losing the final in four sets to Sinner. The 22-year-old has lifted the most titles so far in the season, taking home the Rotterdam Open, Queen’s Club Championships, two Masters 1000 trophies in Monte Carlo and Rome, and his career’s second French Open title, which he won by eking out a five-set win over Sinner.

Sinner and Alcaraz are not playing the Canadian Open. They would start their campaign in the States at the Cincinnati Masters, where Alcaraz had suffered a first-round exit. Sinner will enter the tournament as the defending champion.

Taylor Fritz makes his feelings known on players’ complaints about burnout

Taylor Fritz has made it clear that he is not at all suffering from burnout. Tennis players usually get exhausted as the season nears its end, which doesn’t end before the year-end championships in November. Top players like Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek have often criticized the hectic 11-month tennis calendar, and so has Fritz.

According to Fritz, the reason why Alcaraz, Aryna Sabalenka, Jannik Sinner, and Novak Djokovic, among other top players, decided to skip the Canadian Open is because of the cramped schedule. When he was asked about players’ burnout, Fritz said that not playing some tournaments at the start of the season, perhaps, is the reason why he is not dealing with burnout.

Sometimes you get to a tournament and you’re burnt out, and that’s like, it’s tough…like it’s tough to do anything about it. Like for me personally right now, I feel good and I feel ready to play. I think a lot of that is due to the fact that I spent, you know, a good amount of the beginning of the year injured, and even when I was playing tournaments, I was like not playing in between tournaments, trying to get healthy.

Fritz would have skipped the Citi Open, but he was forced to play because of the new ATP rule. As per the rule, players have to play four ATP 500 tournaments, including one after the US Open. Before the Washington event, Fritz had played only two events of the 500 category- the Dallas Open and the Queen’s Club Championships.

In the Citi Open, he was defeated in the quarterfinal by eventual runner-up Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. He will start his Canadian Open campaign by locking horns with Roberto Carballes Baena.
