Taylor Fritz has revealed that he’s excited to work with his idol and former World No.1 Andre Agassi at the Laver Cup. Agassi is Team World’s captain at the tournament, taking over from John McEnroe. The eight-time Grand Slam champion is known for his unique tennis style and analysis and hopes to implement it into his team.
Fritz arrived in San Francisco for the Laver Cup just days after the disappointing elimination of the United States from the Davis Cup. The US fell to the Czech Republic on home soil. The American star is the highest-ranking player for Team World and the most experienced player in the team, considering his number of titles.
He leads the team alongside Francisco Cerundolo, Alex de Minaur, debutants Joao Fonseca, Alex Michelsen, and Reilly Opelka, returning to the tournament for the first time since 2021. Fritz has been an integral part of Team World’s success at the tournament. He contributed to the team’s back-to-back titles in 2022 and 2023 with singles wins over Cameron Norrie and Andrey Rublev.
In fact, he has won 10 points for Team World in his four appearances, which makes him the fifth player in the team’s all-time Laver Cup points scorer. However, last year, he failed to give Team World the much-needed victory as he fell to Carlos Alcaraz in the final match on Day 3, leaving Team Europe to claim the title.
Nonetheless, with Andre Agassi now Team World’s captain, the American star believes the team can do better than last year. He revealed during his interview with the Laver Cup that he’s genuinely excited to work with the former World No.1 throughout the tournament in San Francisco:
Agassi was an idol for many Americans, including me, growing up. I’m thrilled to have the opportunity to work with him on the court. People joke that we’ll spend more time talking than practicing, but I’m genuinely excited for the chance to connect with him and go through this process together.
Team World has been affected by a series of withdrawals, with three American stars, Ben Shelton, Tommy Paul, and Frances Tiafoe withdrawing. The three players pulled out due to injury, which left Agassi with no choice but to seek their replacement. But the tennis legend will hope it doesn’t affect the team’s performance at the event.
Taylor Fritz happy to be part of Team World at the 2025 Laver Cup
Taylor Fritz has won two titles this season and both came on the grass-court. He swept past Alexander Zverev in the Stuttgart Open final to claim the title before claiming the Eastbourne International. Also, his best Grand Slam run was reaching the semi-finals of the Wimbledon Championships before losing to Carlos Alcaraz in four sets.

However, at the Laver Cup, he’s looking forward to helping Team World win its third title. During the aforementioned interview, he revealed that he loves playing at the tournament and hopes for a special experience at this year’s edition:
I love playing events where we can be together as a team. Cheering them on from the bench when I’m not playing and hearing them cheer for me when I’m playing is just amazing, unlike anything we do anywhere else. The energy we give each other makes us all play so much better. It’s different. When you have a team to celebrate with. It makes everything so special to experience those moments.
Fritz will compete against Team Europe’s Alcaraz, Zverev, Jakub Mensik, Flavio Cobolli, Casper Ruud and Tomas Machac. The American star has beaten Zverev in all their past five meetings but has not overcome Alcaraz on tour. He will likely face Mensik at the Laver Cup, just days after beating him at the Davis Cup.
