Taylor Fritz is into the fourth round of the Wimbledon Championship after overcoming a rather tough tie against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. The American star is one of the players who has spent the most minutes on the court at the Grand Slam tournament this year. But having come this far, the fifth seed now sees himself as a contender for the title.
Fritz has never won a Grand Slam in his career. The only time he came close to doing so was at the US Open in 2024, when he lost to Jannik Sinner in straight sets in the final. Last year, at Wimbledon, he reached the quarter-finals but was beaten by Lorenzo Musetti in five sets. This year, there is a chance of him getting close to the finishing line after several seeded players crash out of the tournament.
The 27-year-old is also in his best form this season. Before the SW19, he claimed the Stuttgart Open title after defeating Alexander Zverev in the final, and he then followed it up by defending the Eastbourne Open. Also, he won back-to-back five-set matches against Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard and Gabriel Diallo, in the first and second sets, respectively.
Against Davidovich Fokina, he delivered a dominant display to beat the Spaniard despite twice receiving a medical timeout to treat his right elbow after diving on the grass to win a point. The former World No.4 needed three hours and twelve minutes to beat Davidovich Fokina 6-4, 6-3, 6(5)-7, 6-1.
After the win, Fritz was asked if he saw himself as a contender for the Wimbledon Championships considering his form. The American wasted no time in affirming that he’s in a good place to fight for the title:
Right now, I’m in a good place, playing at a very high level, though there are some things I could do better. If I manage to improve on those things… well, we’ll see, for now, I’m pleased with my game. It’s going to be tough against Thompson; he’ll probably serve and volley a lot, he beat me that way at Queen’s last year, he’s good on grass.
Fritz will now face Jordan Thompson in the fourth round on Sunday (July 6) as the Australian defeated Luciano Darderi in four sets to earn his place at this stage. However, Fritz and Thompson hold a 1-1 head-to-head record on tour, but the latter won their only grass meeting at the Queen’s Club Championships last year.
Taylor Fritz says he’s not concerned about other top players’ exit from the Wimbledon Championship
3rd seed Alexander Zverev and 4th seed Jack Draper have crashed out of the Wimbledon Championships. The former was eliminated in the first round, while the latter lost to a former finalist, Marin Cilic, in the second. Fritz now has the advantage of overtaking them in the ATP rankings and reaching a career-high after Wimbledon.

However, when asked about it during his press conference, the American star revealed that he’s just focused on who he will play next and not entirely on the draw and rankings:
All I think about is taking it one match at a time, but for me, it’s straightforward. Whenever I’ve had success in big tournaments, my process has always been this way. Maybe I can look slightly ahead on the day of the draw, just to see who’s out there, but I’ll never think about playing with anyone ahead of time, with the people I see near me in the draw.
The 27-year-old is not guaranteed to overtake Draper unless he gets beyond the quarter-finals of the Wimbledon Championship. He will also hope to get closer to Zverev in the rankings, if he can reach the final or, perhaps, win the title.
