Taylor Fritz brought some lightheartedness to his US Open quarterfinal, wearing his “Boss” headband upside down for much of the match against Novak Djokovic. The small fashion mishap drew laughs but did little to influence the outcome. Fritz admitted the mistake later with his usual sense of humor.

Unfortunately, the upside-down bandana wasn’t a lucky charm. The American once again fell short at a Grand Slam, continuing his wait for a breakthrough on the biggest stage. Despite strong form this season, he couldn’t find a way past Djokovic. Fritz wrote on X:

Yo why’d nobody tell me that sh*t was backwards.

Fritz, ranked No. 4 at this year’s event, has often faced criticism for not delivering in majors. His loss in New York only added to that narrative. For all his talent and titles on the ATP Tour, the American has yet to turn it into success at Grand Slam level.

Against Djokovic, the task was as difficult as ever. The Serbian, chasing his 25th Slam, extended his dominance over Fritz to 11-0. While Fritz’s effort was commendable, he again came up short against one of the sport’s greatest champions.

Novak Djokovic dismantles Taylor Fritz at the US Open

Novak Djokovic overcame a spirited challenge from Taylor Fritz to keep his US Open title hopes alive. The Serbian, chasing a record 25th Grand Slam crown, won 6-3, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4 to extend his unbeaten head-to-head record against the American to 11-0.

Fritz created 13 break chances but converted only two, a stat that proved costly. Djokovic, now a 14-time semi-finalist in New York, will next face Carlos Alcaraz in a highly anticipated showdown.

The match was full of tense moments. Djokovic saved five break points while serving for the first set and immediately regained control after being broken late in the second. Fritz fought back in the third set, fueled by the New York crowd, but struggled to maintain consistency. A double fault in the fourth set at 4-5 handed Djokovic the win after three hours and 24 minutes on court.

After the match, Djokovic admitted the contest was far from easy. He praised Fritz’s aggressive style and acknowledged that many of his service games felt like survival. Despite not feeling dominant from the baseline, he emphasized the importance of resilience. The seventh seed also celebrated the victory with a playful dance tribute to his daughter, Tara, who was celebrating her birthday.

With the victory, Djokovic tied Jimmy Connors for the most semi-final appearances in US Open history. He has already lifted the trophy four times in New York and has now reached the last four at all majors this year, the seventh time in his career he has achieved that feat. His season record stands at 31 wins and nine losses, underlining his continued ability to deliver at the highest level.

The history of Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic

Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic are set for another chapter in their rivalry, meeting in the 2025 US Open semi-finals. It will be their first encounter in New York, completing their collection of Grand Slam matchups.

The stakes are massive: Djokovic seeks his first Slam final in over a year, while Alcaraz is chasing his first US Open final since 2022. The Spaniard has yet to lose a set this fortnight, while Djokovic arrives after battling through fitness struggles but earning an impressive win over Taylor Fritz.

A title in New York would carry historic implications for both. For Alcaraz, it would mean regaining the world No. 1 ranking for the first time since 2023. For Djokovic, it would bring a record-breaking 25th Grand Slam crown. Their head-to-head has already produced several classics, beginning with Alcaraz’s breakthrough win at the 2022 Madrid Open, where the teenager beat both Nadal and Djokovic en route to the title.

Since then, the pair have traded blows on the sport’s biggest stages. Djokovic won their 2023 French Open semi-final after Alcaraz suffered cramps, but Alcaraz struck back in a memorable Wimbledon final that same year. Djokovic then edged him in a Cincinnati marathon before sweeping their ATP Finals clash. More battles followed in 2024, including Alcaraz’s straight-sets Wimbledon triumph and Djokovic’s Olympic gold medal win in Paris.

Their most recent duel came at the 2025 Australian Open, where Djokovic recovered from losing the first set to claim victory despite an injury scare. Now, with the rivalry standing at 5-3 in Djokovic’s favor, the US Open will host their ninth meeting. Both players arrive with different motivations, but the stage is set for another defining showdown between the two stars.
