Iga Swiatek enjoyed a memorable day at the US Open as she combined success on the court with a personal delight off of it. The Wimbledon champion secured her 50th victory of the season by defeating Colombia’s Emiliana Arango 6-1, 6-2 in just an hour. Her dominant serving display saw her lose only three points on first serve, underlining her status as one of the tournament favorites.
Soon after leaving Arthur Ashe Stadium, the Polish star received unexpected news that added to her joy. A devoted Taylor Swift fan, Swiatek discovered that her musical idol had announced her engagement. The timing of the announcement turned her routine win into a double celebration. Swiatek said in her US Open post-match press conference:
She posted when I finished. Yeah, maybe that’s not a coincidence. I don’t know. My team showed me on Instagram. I’m just happy for her, because she deserves the best. Obviously she had a lot of boyfriends, so we know all about that. So hopefully this one will, you know, stick forever. Travis seems like a great guy. She seems super happy, so I’m happy for her. I wish them all the best.
The 24-year-old world No. 2 has never hidden her admiration for Swift. She has often spoken about how the American singer’s music helped her through her teenage years and even improved her English. Her fandom has become a well-known part of her public image, connecting her to fans beyond tennis. She added:
I have been a fan since 2014. I just followed everything. Then when the ‘Reputation’ album came out, I’ve got to say I didn’t really like it that much. I liked the previous albums better. So I had a little break. But then in 2019 and when ‘Folklore’ and ‘Evermore’ were released during COVID, I started listening to Taylor again. It’s great.

Swiatek’s passion for Swift’s music has even extended to her career milestones. After winning the French Open last year, she attended one of the Eras Tour concerts. That victory also brought her a special gift: a handwritten note of congratulations from Swift herself. For Swiatek, both tennis and music continue to provide moments of inspiration and celebration.
Iga Swiatek advances at the US Open
Second seed Iga Swiatek began her US Open campaign in style with a commanding 6-1, 6-2 win over Emiliana Arango. The match lasted exactly an hour, with the Polish star showing her trademark consistency and control. It was another confident step in what has been a strong summer comeback.

Swiatek ended a long wait for silverware in July by winning Wimbledon, her first title in over a year and her sixth major overall. She followed that success with a title run in Cincinnati, proving her form is back at its best. After briefly slipping to No. 8 in the rankings earlier this season, she has already climbed back up to No. 2.
The 2022 champion in New York has her sights set on reclaiming the crown. If she wins the US Open this year, she would become the first woman since Serena Williams in 2012 to complete the Wimbledon–US Open double. A triumph could also push her past Aryna Sabalenka and return her to the top of the world rankings.
Iga Swiatek makes history at the US Open
Iga Swiatek struck 26 winners to just 14 unforced errors and broke serve four times. It was a performance that underlined why she is widely considered one of the main contenders for the title. Swiatek is chasing her seventh Grand Slam crown and her second US Open triumph, having lifted the trophy in 2022.

The Polish star has built a remarkable record in the early rounds of majors. She has now won 24 consecutive first-round matches at Grand Slam events. Her only opening-round defeat came at Wimbledon back in 2019. With that consistency, she has reached at least the third round in every Slam since early 2020.
Next, Swiatek will face Suzan Lamens, who advanced with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Valerie Glozman. It will be the first time the two meet on tour. Lamens is ranked No. 66, while Swiatek enters as the heavy favourite to progress further in her quest for another major title.
