In Short
  • Taylor Townsend gained significant support after her US Open victory over Jelena Ostapenko, despite a heated exchange post-match.
  • Ostapenko criticized Townsend for not apologizing after a controversial point, claiming she displayed "no class."
  • Townsend faced backlash for a social media post while in China, leading to an apology and reflection on cultural sensitivities.

Taylor Townsend has been on both sides of the spectrum when it comes to criticism and praise from fans in recent months. She went from receiving a lot of support after an angry argument with Jelena Ostapenko to being criticized in September, a month after the US Open, for a post about China for the wrong reasons.

Townsend gained a lot of support and fame in one of the most memorable moments of the 2025 US Open. She faced former French Open champion Ostapenko in the second round of the tournament, a tie in which she was the least favorite to win. However, surprisingly, the American doubles star claimed the victory 7-5, 6-1.

However, as both players approached the net for a handshake, Ostapenko looked angry at something that she didn’t like about Townsend’s game. Townsend walked to the net in joy, and then Ostapenko voiced her anger that the American star didn’t apologize after clipping the net during a rally in the second set.

Nonetheless, it is an unwritten rule that players do after winning a cheap point, such as one close to the net. This incident upset Ostapenko so much on the court, and she claimed Townsend had “no class” and “no education“. Amid this, Townsend has reached the third round of a Grand Slam singles event for just the fourth time.

So, instead of falling into the drama, she was mainly focused on enjoying her achievement on the court. So, she went on to celebrate the success with her team and home fans on the court. However, over five months after the incident, she took her time to reflect on everything that happened on the Changeover podcast:

I was so locked into my zone during the US Open that I didn’t really process everything that was happening. I had to play doubles the next day, so I didn’t have time to go deep into it. I knew things were blowing up, but I missed a lot—messages, support, all of that—because I was still competing. And for me, that wasn’t more important than my mission. I understood it was a pivotal moment—not just in tennis, but culturally. I was reaching like 60 million impressions on my page.

Since the incident, Townsend has focused more on the doubles category on tour and has flourished there. In fact, she won the Indian Wells doubles alongside Katerina Siniakova. Their partnership has grown strongly since last year. Meanwhile, Ostapenko has struggled in the singles events. Her best run since then was reaching the semi-finals of the Doha Open in February.

Taylor Townsend opens up on the criticism she received after her post in a Chinese restaurant

Taylor Townsend has gained support from fans after the US Open, but things quickly turned bad for her. She found herself in hot water when she posted a video while competing in China. In the clip, she went to a restaurant with fellow compatriot Hailey Baptiste and shared her opinion about the food on offer and mocked it in the process.

That got the attention of fans on social media, and they slammed her for her actions, particularly the Chinese fans, and she apologized. During the aforementioned interview, she admitted that she didn’t expect a lot of hate and criticism, just less than a month after being a hero for her composure during her argument with Jelena Ostapenko:

She responded to that situation. After the US Open, I saw a lot of love, but then the situation in China showed me the other side. It made me realise how different things can be culturally—how what you say can be received very differently depending on where you are. My intention was never to be disrespectful or mean. But I probably shouldn’t have posted certain things—I should have kept them to myself.

Townsend is currently in the final of the doubles of the Miami Open alongside Katerina Siniakova. The pair is seeking to complete the Sunshine Double in the doubles category. They will face Italy’s pair Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini. The match is expected to be a tight contest at the Stadium Court.
