Taylor Townsend suffered a heartbreaking loss at the 2025 US Open after failing to save eight match points against former Wimbledon champion Barbora Krejcikova in the fourth round. The doubles World No.1 was seeking to reach the quarter-finals of the New York Grand Slam for the first time in her career, but that failed to materialize.

Townsend has had a dramatic week at the US Open so far. She made headlines in the second round after her opponent, Jelena Ostapenko, confronted her during their routine post-match handshake at the net. She defeated the former French Open champion 7-5, 6-1 to reach the third round.

She then used the victory as an inspiration against teenage sensation and World No.5 Mirra Andreeva, stunning the Russian teenage sensation in straight sets. Townsend continued with the momentum in the fourth round and looked set to reach the quarter after winning the first set 6-1 against Krejcikova.

But a moment of relapse in the second set saw Krejcikova rally from 3-6 in the tiebreak to win the set. That changed the match completely as Krejcikova got the momentum she deserved and turned the game in her favor, winning 1-6, 7-6(13), 6-3 to clinch a ticket in the quarter-finals at Flushing Meadows.

The American, who has won two doubles Grand Slam titles, was left in tears as she walked off the court with the crowd roaring with support. During her post-match press conference, she was asked what she learned from her run in the singles event. Townsend revealed that she’s currently where she needs to be in singles events, while hoping to win a major singles title in the future.

I’m exactly where I need to be. I was kind of inching there, but I’m exactly where I need to be.That’s it. I’m playing the tennis I need to play be inside the Top 20, Top 10 to win a Grand Slam. She’s a two-time Grand Slam champion. I have beaten a Grand Slam champion this tournament. So I have everything that I need, and, you know, it’s just about now just keep getting the reps, keep putting myself in these types of positions.

Townsend defeated Grand Slam champion Simona Halep in the 2019 US Open en route to her fourth-round run. She also holds a career-high ranking of World No.46 in the WTA rankings, but currently, she’s ranked World No.139, and despite her relatively improved run at the US Open, she will not break into the Top 100.

Taylor Townsend believes reaching fourth round of US Open singles a motivation to win doubles event

Townsend opened her US Open campaign in the revamped mixed doubles event alongside her partner Ben Shelton. They won just one match and reached the quarter-finals before losing to the American pair Danielle Collins and Christian Harrison. In the doubles, she’s competing alongside former doubles No.1 Katerina Siniakova.

They won their two opening matches and are into the round of 16. Townsend will be hoping to win her first US Open doubles after finishing as a runner-up in 2022. She revealed after a singles loss that she’s motivated to give her best in the doubles event:

I’m not done here. I have doubles tomorrow. I’m going to do everything that I can to hoist the trophy here. I know I can do it, me and my partner (Katerina Siniakova) have done it before. This is just motivating me to keep doing the things that I know I can do to be a champion.

Townsend has won two doubles major titles, with her first coming at the 2024 Wimbledon Championship and the other at the 2025 Australian Open. She won the doubles title at the Washington Open in July alongside China’s Zhang Shuai, making it her 10th career tour-level crown.
