American tennis star Taylor Townsend recently impressed the tennis community with her determined effort to make it to Cincinnati for her qualifiers. After participating at the National Bank Open as a lucky loser, the left-hander made it to the quarterfinals, showing her resilience and skill.

Yulia Putintseva‘s withdrawal from the Toronto WTA 1000 event due to a knee injury allowed Townsend to enter the main draw. Despite this success, Townsend faced a tight travel schedule to Cincinnati and competed in the qualifying rounds.

I'm so overwhelmed. This is the thing that people don't see. I played my first quarterfinal of the Masters 1000 but lost today. And I had to play five o click tomorrow at Cincinnati. I was thinking how to get out of Toronto and get to Cincinnati. The only flight out of Toronto is like $1400 a person, and a layover, no matter what. So we decided to get a car and drive.

The American, currently ranked World No. 71, spoke openly about the challenges lower-ranked players face on the WTA tour. Unlike top players who have access to private transportation and sponsorships, she said that others in her position often struggle with the financial demands of travel and competition.

To fly it was going to take six and a half hours and to drive, it was like seven. I had to get to my hotel at 5 am, so I had to sleep in my car. All I was trying was to get myself together for my qualifier.

This isn’t the first time Townsend has faced such financial hardships. Over ten years ago, she encountered similar struggles that threatened to derail her tennis career. Despite these challenges, the 28-year-old continues to fight hard and impress everyone in the sport.

Emma Navarro has reached the semifinals at the National Bank Open. On Saturday (August 11) at Sobeys Stadium, she defeated fellow American Taylor Townsend 6-3, 7-6(5).

Townsend’s impressive journey as the lucky loser ended in the quarterfinals. She entered the tournament as an injury replacement and made history by becoming the first lucky loser to reach the WTA 1000 quarterfinals.

Meanwhile, Navarro faced another American, Amanda Anisimova, in the semifinals on Sunday and faced defeat. Anisimova continued her scintillating run to make it to the final. In the other semifinal, Diana Shnaider lost to Jessica Pegula.

Incidentally, five American women made it to the final eight at the event, the most at a WTA 1000 event since 2009 and the highest at any tournament since 2001.
