Team Europe’s Captain Yannick Noah has praised Carlos Alcaraz for his personality at the Laver Cup in San Francisco. The team began with the much-needed energy on Day 1 of the tournament, winning three of the four matches against Team World. Alcaraz made just his second appearance at the event on Friday (September 19).
Alcaraz is competing in his first tournament since winning his sixth Grand Slam at the US Open in New York. He partnered with Jakub Mensik in the fourth match of Day 1 against Team World’s Taylor Fritz and Alex Michelsen. The Spaniard and the Miami Open champion gave a comprehensive performance as they were never broken in the match.
Alcaraz and Mensik showed good partnership and skills, forcing Fritz and Michelsen to make errors. The duo went on to triumph 7-6(7), 6-4 in the match. Before that, Casper Ruud had kicked off the tournament for Team Europe, beating Team World’s Reilly Opelka in a fierce battle in the first match, 6-4, 7-6(4).
Mensik then crushed Michelsen’s hopes of winning for Team World 6-1 7-6(3) 10-8. The only problem Team Europe had was in the third singles match of the opening day as Flavio Cobolli struggled to dominate Team World’s Joao Fonseca. The Italian star showed some moments of brilliance on the court, but it was not enough as Fonseca defeated him 6-4, 6-3.
After the end of Day 1 matches, Yannick Noah was asked what he thought about the energy that Alcaraz brings to Team Europe at the Laver Cup. The Frenchman revealed that he’s amazed at how much Alcaraz loves the sport, while praising his tactical intelligence on the court:
I see in him a good person who loves tennis. I have trained many tennis players and spent time with great players, but he surprised me with how much he loves this sport and how he can convey things on and off the court. He has great tactical intelligence and game knowledge and is a great teammate who cares for everyone.
Alcaraz is expected to play a major role in Team Europe’s bid to win the Laver Cup for the sixth time and the second consecutive time. The Spaniard helped the team last year by winning eight of their 13 points, beating the likes of Fritz, Ben Shelton, and Frances Tiafoe. However, Team World is missing a lot of their top players, including Tommy Paul and Shelton, at the tournament, and that can easily help Team Europe win the title.
Carlos Alcaraz reveals why he loves playing doubles matches at the Laver Cup
Match victories in the opening day of the Laver Cup are worth one point each, with two points awarded for wins on the second and third days. Last year, that proved crucial for Team Europe, which began poorly but settled into the event on the second and third days. But this year, they have started with more energy.

Carlos Alcaraz and Jakub Mensik were very successful in proving their intensity at the tournament as they were never broken. During Alcaraz’s on-court interview, he revealed that the doubles match allowed him to show his trademark skills and flair on the court:
I think it [doubles] gives you more opportunities to make great shots, great volleys. But doubles is not just about one player. It was a team [effort] with a great player in Jakub. He has great skills and made me comfortable on the court.
On Day 2 at the Laver Cup, Alcaraz will kick off his singles with a blockbuster clash against Team World’s Taylor Fritz. But before that, Alexander Zverev will take on Alex de Minaur, while Holger Rune will hope to cement Team Europe’s lead when he faces Argentine star Francisco Cerundolo.
