Team USA men’s basketball winning the gold medal at the Paris Olympics was a culmination of everything that transpired over the past year. Getting embarrassed at the FIBA World Cup, fans calling out the NBA for making the game soft. They knew they would fix those issues. But one of the biggest sticking points was when American sprinter, Noah Lyles called out NBA championship-winning teams for referring to themselves as world champions. Today, USA Basketball responded.
After the gold medal win, the official X account of USA Basketball posted a picture of Team USA stepping up to the winner’s podium. Along with that was this caption:
Are we the World Champs now?USA Basketball on X
That was a direct shot at Noah Lyles. After all, they proved that they are still the definition of elite basketball. A team that comprises the best of the best players in the world winning gold on the international stage.
This was not the first time that they took a shot at the sprinter. After winning the semifinals against Serbia, they took a shot at Lyles suggesting they do not play for bronze. Noah Lyles ended up with bronze despite talking trash he would destroy his opponents in the 200m finals at this Olympics.
However, Team USA calling themselves world champions was never the problem, according to Lyles. Instead, he had a bone to pick with NBA champions winning a national championship and believing they were world champs. However, his words hit a little close to the heart as they still echoed in their minds even after a year. Despite the banter, Lyles would be proud that Team USA won gold for their nation. A feat even he accomplished in the 100m finals.
The diss will be complete if Team USA women win gold
USA Basketball could further taunt Lyles if the women’s team wins gold too. Compared to what transpired in the men’s games, the women are on a different level. They have won seven straight gold medals and will look to make it eight tonight.
If they win, again, it will mean that the best female basketball players in the world are part of the WNBA. Although that is already a foregone conclusion, it will make for a fitting end to the entire ‘world champs’ controversy.
With the likes of A’ja Wilson, Breanna Stewart, and Sabrina Ionescu headlining a super team, they should make short work of defeating France. Even though the French women are no slouches themselves, they cannot hold a candle to how good Team USA women are at the Paris Olympics.
