Ben Shelton lost the doubles match he played with Team World teammate Frances Tiafoe against Team Europe’s Carlos Alcaraz and Casper Ruud but secured a thumping win in singles over Daniil Medvedev on Sunday (September 22). Shelton, who lost his first singles match to Alcaraz on Saturday, came out victorious over Medvedev with a scoreline of 6(6)-7, 7-5, 10-7.
The 21-year-old American lost the tie-break after a controversial first set as Medvedev lost his cool, leading to arguments in the courts. After the match, a ‘cooked’ Shelton talked about what drove him to produce a dominating performance against Medvedev.
I wanted to redeem myself after this morning. Obviously, I lost my singles yesterday and I didn't want to come out winless. I played a lot of matches this weekend. I'm pretty cooked.Ben Shelton said after the match
With this win, Team World is nearing its third consecutive Laver Cup victory as they previously won the tournament in London and Vancouver respectively. Team World, who are leading 11-7 on the leaderboard, need another victory to win the tournament.
Frances Tiafoe gets angry after chair umpire doesn’t disqualify Daniil Medvedev during match against Ben Shelton
When Ben Shelton was facing Daniil Medvedev in the second match of the day, Team Europe was 7-8 on the point table thanks to Team Europe’s doubles victory. At one point, Medvedev threw his racket in anger after giving the American a set point during the first set and received a code violation from the chair umpire Mohamed Lahyani for his unsportsmanlike conduct.
Shelton wasn’t happy with the decision and neither did the rest of the Team World players as they rather wanted the ‘disqualification’. The chair umpire, however, explained to Team World members why Medvedev wasn’t disqualified from the match.
Frances, it bounced and it didn’t hit anyone. The result was not bad. If it had hit someone, I agree with you.Mohamed Lahyani told Frances Tiafoe
Tiafoe, however, did not stop there as he went to the supervisors and other umpires and continued to discuss the incident with Gerry Armstrong. The 26-year-old, like Shelton, also defeated Medvedev in three sets in Saturday’s singles. For Team Europe to save themselves from three back-to-back Laver Cup defeats, they have to win their next two matches. If Tiafoe beats Alexander Zverev, Team World, who will then reach 13 points, will be the winner.
