3 teams that could stop Patrick Mahomes from becoming the GOAT

Patrick Mahomes is that quarterback who can legitimately say that he has a chance of becoming the GOAT. Winning three Super Bowls and playing in a system created by Andy Reid has placed him perfectly to replicate or even surpass the career of a certain Tom Brady.
That system still needs Mahomes and his Kansas City Chiefs to be at their very best. But even then, there could be some teams who could derail those plans.
The three-time Super Bowl MVP knows that it is a daunting task. But he has a clear idea about how he can achieve the GOAT status. As he knows that he is in the perfect situation or system to do that. He is too intelligent to think otherwise. His intangibles, intelligence, and obviously his otherworldly abilities in throwing a football, is what led the Kansas City Chiefs to draft him.
But he has to put in the work, keep himself fit, and, most importantly, keep the focus consistent. The rest is up to head coach Andy Reid, his coaching staff, and the Chiefs front office. They know that the more they have success, the more other teams will push themselves to topple them off their perch.
Some teams have come close but have not reached there yet. Especially three of them that are knocking on the door and could stop Patrick Mahomes from becoming the GOAT.
Super Bowl LVIII opponents San Francisco 49ers
The San Francisco 49ers just lost to the Kansas City Chiefs in the Super Bowl. It was the second time the 49ers met the Chiefs in the past five years at the biggest stage in football. How often do the same opponents meet each other in the Super Bowl in this close a time span? That itself should make it clear how the 49ers are built.
Starting from the front office helmed by John Lynch to head coach Kyle Shanahan, the team has a system in place. That system is what brought them back to the Super Bowl but with different quarterbacks playing in either of them.
That itself gives one an understanding of what works for the team. They build a solid foundation based off of great coaching and build up or add pieces as they go. They have been the most playoff-ready team in the NFC for the past five seasons, making it to the Championship Game four times. The only time they did not was when the team was riddled by injuries.
Five years is a lifetime in the NFL. In that period teams could go through a rebuild and people can lose their jobs. But the only constant in the NFL has been the San Francisco 49ers and their presence in the playoffs. If this solid base is already there, it could be possible that they will continue to do so in the future. But they could also take the next step and win the Lombardi trophy.
If they happen to take the next step, in all likelihood, the San Francisco 49ers would like to continue winning. A situation that could make a serious dent in the GOAT aspirations of Patrick Mahomes. The 49ers are the best-placed team to spoil the GOAT party.
Patrick Mahomes knows how good the Philadelphia Eagles are
When Mahomes won his second Super Bowl, it was against the Philadelphia Eagles in 2023. If anything, he must have noticed that the Philadelphia Eagles have a formula in place. Have a head coach at the helm who is not afraid to make the right calls. He also saw a mix of young stars and experienced vets having a similar goal. Only they had a miserable by their standards year in 2023-24.
But they showed some traits which will make them Super Bowl contenders for the foreseeable future. First they have Jalen Hurts as their quarterback. Similar to the 49ers, having a young QB, who is unafraid of making the right plays, is important to take the fight to the best of the best. Then the Philadelphia Eagles have invested both in quality veterans who line up alongside developing younger players.
All in all, a formula, that when executed perfectly, can deliver results much in the same way the Kansas City Chiefs and the 49ers have done. After last year’s disappointment, some of the veterans have either retired or joined other teams. But the younger core is seething with a fire inside them to do better. They want to bring the Lombardi home. Not just once, but as many times as possible. That fire from these Philadelphia Eagles could be detrimental to Mahomes.
The Baltimore Ravens are building up
In the first few years of Lamar Jackson‘s tenure with the Baltimore Ravens, the focus was on his ability to run the ball and wreak havoc. But over the last few years, the focus has changed to help Jackson develop and lean more towards his passing game. Not that they would not want him to run. But that dual-threat is what makes the Ravens offense a considerable threat.
Add in Derrick Henry at running back, and a defense that could be battling for the No. 1 spot, and you have a recipe that harks back to the last time they won the Super Bowl. The Baltimore Ravens are masters at finding gems in the draft. They also are good, or rather extremely good, at finding players that suit their mentality and style of play. Those aspects make a team dangerous in the long run.
If only they could have achieved more, then probably the other teams in the league would not have staked a claim at being Super Bowl contenders. But those so-called other teams are not at the same level as the Ravens. They have a lot of issues to fix and question marks everywhere.
The only question mark the Baltimore Ravens have is with regards to their wide receivers. Other than that, the Baltimore Ravens are primed to deny Patrick Mahomes a chance to attempt to win eight Super Bowl titles and become the GOAT.
But just like these three teams, so are the Kansas City Chiefs setup. Following similar principles to win three Super Bowls in the last seven years, their superstar quarterback has been with them. Who could rightly say that the Chiefs won’t be the favorites to take shots at five more?
