World No. 6 Jessica Pegula successfully defended her title at the Canada Open as she beat compatriot Amanda Anisimova in three sets on Monday (August 12). She was emotional after the win and broke down in tears. The 30-year-old then dedicated her title to her Canadian grandparents.

After bagging back-to-back titles at the WTA 1000 tournament, Pegula dedicated each to her grandfather and grandmother who she claimed were natives of the two cities where she won the titles. The Buffalo native was happy to get a chance to play in front of her family.

Toronto, it's nice, it's so close to Buffalo, I had a lot of friends, family, and my grandparents, my husband was able to come today. That's cool, I don't really get that at a lot of tournaments. Then to be able to win the tournament as well, and to be able to share that moment with them is really special. I don't know what it is about Canada, but I just seem to do well, so I'll just … yeah, I'll take it

She then pointed to her grandparents who were present at the venue to cheer for her. The American dedicated her win in Toronto to her grandfather and the one in Montreal to her grandmother.

If I'm saying that right, I think my grandma is from Montreal, and my grandpa is from Toronto, right? Yeah? Okay, so I have one in each city, so that's one for each of you guys.

Pegula scripted history as she beat Anismova 6-3, 2-6, 6-1 in an hour and 27 minutes. She became the first woman to win back-to-back Canada Open titles since Martina Hingis in 2000.

With this, she became the first woman to register 10 consecutive singles wins at the WTA 1000 tournament since Serena Williams won 14 straight matches from 2011 through 2014. The 30-year-old is now the first American woman to win the title at the Toronto site since Williams in 2013.

Moreover, Pegula is the first player to be able to defend a WTA-1000 title since Iga Swiatek (Rome 2021 and 2022) and the first on hard court since Ashleigh Barty (Miami 2019 and 2021). Speaking after the win, the American said that she was excited and “honored” to have achieved these feats.

I know everyone's talking about my record and all this stuff, but it's nice to be able to get through the week and to back it up. So, just super excited, I mean, an honor, really.
