Colorado’s Travis Hunter beat out Boise State RB Ashton Jeanty, Oregon QB Dillon Gabriel, and Miami QB Cam Ward for the 2024 Heisman trophy to become the best football player in college football. He had Deion Sanders (Colorado head coach), whom he views as his adoptive father, present at the ceremony, as his biological father, Travis Hunter Sr., could not make the journey to New York.

After embracing Coach Prime and his Colorado quarterback, Shedeur Sanders, Hunter walked onto the podium for the acceptance speech. He thanked his coaches, teammates, family, friends, and everyone who showed support for him.

I wanna say something to my father. He not here, couldn’t able to make it but I know you watching on TV—Dad, I love you! The things you went through man. Now look at your older son, I did it for you man. All the times that you did not get to see me and the times you came to see my games—probably two games in high school to see in the old TV and come to see me—man, you mean so much to me.

Travis Hunter said in a muffled voice while whipping the tears from his eyes

Hunter further added,

I know you wanted to be here, but you couldn’t, but trust me, I got you; I am bringing the [Heisman] trophy home. I love you.

In 2024, many seemed convinced that Hunter was the clear favorite, even though Ashton Jeanty had a memorable year by his own standards. Jeanty is close to breaking a three-decade-old rushing yards record from Barry Sanders.
