As the skies lit up with fireworks and America celebrated its independence, linebacker Jason Pierre-Paul faced one of the darkest days of his life. On July 4, 2015, the defensive end was lighting fireworks at a neighborhood party in Deerfield Beach, Florida, when the last batch malfunctioned and injured him, resulting in the loss of two and a half fingers.

The injury, however, didn’t end his career. He played three more seasons with the New York Giants, much to Mike Ross‘, the Giants’ then-VP, surprise. In 2018, he joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, where he won his second ring two years later. The defensive end recorded 55 tackles, including 34 solo tackles and 2 interceptions, earning a Pro Bowl selection for the first time since 2012.

He also played a key role in the 2020 NFC Championship game against the Green Bay Packers, sacking star quarterback Aaron Rodgers twice.

His career fell apart after the 2020 season, no thanks to a nagging rotator cuff injury. He joined the Baltimore Ravens in 2022 and finished out his playing days in New Orleans and Miami. After a year-long hiatus, Pierre-Paul still believes there’s more for him on the football field.

In a phone conversation with ESPN, the two-time SB champion mentioned that he still trains as hard as he did ten years ago. He also acknowledged that he can be a closer for a team. Furthermore, Pierre-Paul addressed going back to play for the New York Giants.

I think that’ll be dope. Tremendous. To go back somewhere where my career started … the fans know me and know the type of player that I am. I’ll always be that type of player and just give ’em everything I got, which I know it’ll be more than enough.

Jason Pierre-Paul’s first ring came with a team ranked the worst SB team of this century

In 2011, the New York Giants stunned the world with one of the biggest upsets over Tom Brady and the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI. The Giants barely qualified for the playoffs with just nine wins in the regular season, becoming only the third team in history to reach the Super Bowl with below 10 wins in a 16-game season.

The Giants, despite Jason Pierre-Paul’s breakout season with 16.5 sacks, had one of the worst defenses in the league. In the postseason, they defeated the Atlanta Falcons, Green Bay Packers, and the San Francisco 49ers to become the first to reach the Super Bowl with a negative regular-season point differential.

Recently, Bleacher Report ranked the team as the worst Super Bowl team in this century. The New York Giants team from 2008 is placed just ahead of them in the 24th spot. The 2008 team had one more win than the 2011 team, but no All Pros; Pierre-Paul was the lone star in the 2011 team.

The team that the defensive end may walk into won’t be any better than those teams. The Giants were one of the most uncoordinated and weakly organized teams in the league last season. The extent of how much a quarterback change can do is yet to be seen, though.

The list is led by the 2004 New England Patriots, followed by the Seattle Seahawks’ lone victory season. The 2024-25 Philadelphia Eagles outfit is ranked fourth on the list for toppling one of the best teams in the league after coming from a 14-win regular season.
