“I got completely screwed” Matteo Berrettini calls out ATP for Wimbledon’s point stripping decision, calls it ‘unfair’ for all players

Matteo Berrettini
World No. 10 Matteo Berrettini will be one of the biggest losers from the decision of ATP to remove all ranking points from the 2022 Wimbledon Championships. The Italian who had injured himself prior to the clay season missed the entire Golden Swing this year including the 2022 French Open dropping massive points in the process.
However, the biggest hit he will take will come in this year’s Wimbledon. After the Championships decided to ban all Russian and Belarusian players from playing this year, the ATP and WTA decided to remove ranking points from the Grand Slam turning it to be an exhibition event. But in the process of protecting the Russian and Belarusian players, the entire Tour will be dropping points from last year’s Wimbledon, a decision that hasn’t met with unanimous support from the tennis fraternity.
Matteo Berrettini will lose 2275 points in a month

Berrettini currently holds points from his 2019 Stuttgart Open title as well as the entire 500 points he won by claiming the title at the 2021 Queen’s Club. Being the runner-up at the 2021 Wimbledon to Novak Djokovic, he had 1200 points to defend in the All-England Club, but given the current circumstances, he will lose the points from Wimbledon for sure and given he has just returned to the Tour, the title defence in Queen’s Club will also be difficult for him.
“I got completely screwed. It’s a difficult situation, I have so many points to defend and now I can’t defend them anymore. I’m not in the best of moods and we’re all fighting for points. I will play as many tournaments as possible. It’s bad what happened for the Russians and the Belarusians, but it’s not fair for the rest of the players either,” said Berrettini in comments reported by welovetennis.
Matteo has currently reached the semi-finals in the 2022 Stuttgart Open where he will take on local boy Oscar Otte for a place in the finals and would need to win as he is in dire need of points after his 2-month long absence from the Tour during the claycourt season.
