Novak Djokovic is arguably one of the best tennis players ever. However, there has always been discourse over his fan following and admiration. The soon-to-be World No. 1 has the most titles for a male player in terms of achievement. His accomplishments have come to surpass those of Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. However, there is a narrative that the other two goats are more adored by people than the Serbian ace.
The 36-year-old had to go through a lot of scrutiny and criticism for his decision to not vaccinate himself against the COVID-19 virus. He was denied entry to the countries of Australia and the USA for the same reason. He unfortunately could not compete at the Australian Open or US Open in 2022 because of it. He drew a lot of flak for his anti-vaccine philosophy.
Even before the vaccine debacle, Djokovic was painted as an outsider who was defeating their favorites, Federer and Nadal.
The ground reality is nonetheless quite different. As we can see in the video, the fans were rushing to get a glimpse of the second seed and hopefully get his signature. The anticipation was so strong that the people did not even wait for the match to get over. They were scrambling to get to him even before the match was over. This was proof of how universally loved and appreciated Djokovic is.
Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals of the US Open
Novak Djokovic knocked out Croatian qualifier Borna Gojo in the fourth round of the US Open. The Serb won in three straight sets with a scoreline of 6-2, 7-5, 6-4. In the game, Gojo blasted 40 winners but also made 40 unforced errors to his opponent’s 12. Djokovic later revealed in his post-match interview that he had studied the World No. 105’s game. He said that one of the keys to the match was to neutralize his serve and try to reduce the number of aces and winners from that shot. That is how he won the fourth round.
This will be the veteran’s 57th Grand Slam quarterfinal. The Serbian star will meet 9th seed Taylor Fritz in the quarterfinals. The 36-year-old said that the matches would only get tougher from here on out, but he was ready for the challenge.
