Ukraine’s Marta Kostyuk exhibited great resilience and skills to challenge the reigning US Open champion Coco Gauff during their match in the quarterfinal of the 2024 Australian Open.

Despite conceding the first set in the tiebreaker, Kostyuk kept the grind on and it reflected in the second set when she won the point of the tournament after a 21 shot rally.

Marta Kostyuk showed great anticipation and reflexes to return anything and everything that was thrown at her. Serving for a break point in the eighth game of the second set, Kostyuk was challenged by Gauff who hit volleys all across the court. The American wanted to catch her opponent off guard but Kostyuk was not ready to give up.

Despite Gauff going closer to the net and attacking with brute force, Kostyuk managed to return everything. She ran across the court, slid, and got her racket to touch the ball at any cost. Eventually, the hard work paid off as Gauff failed to land a winner and Kostyuk was awarded the point.

The Ukrainian had her hands aloft after what was termed the “most adventurous point of the tournament” by the commentator. Kostyuk looked all worked up as she panted with both her hands on the knee.

No semifinal qualification but still the best outing at a Grand Slam for Marta Kostyuk

Although Marta Kostyuk failed to make it to the semifinals at the 2024 Australian Open, this was the Ukrainian’s best-ever showing at a Grand Slam tournament.

Ever since Kostyuk started playing at Grand Slam events, her best performance was a fourth-round qualification which she managed at the 2021 French Open.

The Ukrainian played some excellent tennis in this one-and-a-half-week time period. Kostyuk started her campaign against Claire Liu and she had a little trouble beating the American (6-3, 4-6, 6-1). In the second round, Kostyuk upped her game as she beat 25th seed Elise Mertens after being a set down. The Ukrainian won the match 5-7, 6-1, 7-6.

Kostyuk met Elina Avanesyan in the third round and the Ukrainian once again won the match after being a set down. She beat her Russian opponent 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. In the fourth round, Kostyuk had no problem beating qualifier Maria Timofeeva in straight sets of 6-2, 6-1.
