In football, there are blowout games and then there is what the Tennessee Volunteers did to the Kent State Golden Flashes. The No. 9 ranked team improved to 3-0 after beating their opponent to leave them with a 0-3 record. It was embarrassing, to say the least, for Kent State, who were probably better off not showing up to the game rather than lose in the manner they did.

The final score was 71-0 in favor of the Volunteers. College football is so back indeed! However, amid this massacre, the Volunteers opted to ‘kick a man when he was down,’ quite literally. The Volunteers chose to go for an onside kick late in the first quarter when they were up 30-0.

Did the Tennessee Volunteers violate any football rules with this kick? Not really. But they did happen to violate a fundamental rule of sportsmanship: do not disrespect your opponents, especially in blowout games.

In this instance, the coaches did not choose to run this play—it was a decision made by the players themselves.

Fans were appalled at the Volunteers’ decision to go for an onside kick in this situation

The game was one that Kent State players wish to desperately forget. However, it’s not going away anytime soon. To put this loss into perspective, the Volunteers had 456 yards rushing while Kent State had just 54 yards. It was a beatdown. This is why it makes the winner’s decision to onside-kick all the more unacceptable.

Interesting theory and a strong possibility…

An absolute war crime.

Tennessee totaled 740 yards against Kent State, and they dropped 71 points, the most for the team since 1929. Dylan Sampson had a night to remember as he recorded 101 rushing yards and four touchdowns on 13 attempts.

The team has been on a roll in the past three weeks with all of its wins being blowouts. The first game against Chattanooga was a 69-3 win, the Week 2 game against NC State was a 51-10 blowout, and Week 3 was the best at 71-0.
