“He doesn’t know what humanitarian aid means” Shamil Tarpischev questions Andrey Rublev’s remarks on the Wimbledon ban

Andrey Rublev, Italian Open

The former Russian tennis player and now a coach Shamil Tarpischev has commented on compatriot Andrey Rublev saying that he does know what “humanitarian aids” mean. This happened after Wimbledon banned Russian and Belarusian players from participating in this year’s upcoming tournament.

Rublev is currently world No.8 and will lose points in the ranking if not allowed to play at Wimbledon. Although, he will definitely get affected, fellow star player and World No.2 Daniil Medvedev will get affected more along with the Belarusian Aryna Sabalenka.

I don’t know what Rublev wants to prove or explain: Tarpischev

The scenario was such that Rublev suggested that instead of banning the players it would be appropriate to donate the prize money of Russian and Belarusian players to Ukraine and should be sent for “humanitarian aid” in Ukraine. This happened after Wimbledon‘s ban, and ATP and WTA disagreed with Wimbledon on the decision of banning players based on their nationality.

Rublev felt that this was discrimination against the Russians and Belarusians and said“To give all the prize money would have a more positive effect to humanitarian help, to the families who are suffering, to the kids who are suffering.”. The Ukrainian professional tennis player Elina Svitolina said that the Russians and Belarusian players should be allowed to play because they clearly oppose the decision of the Russian government to invade Ukraine.

To this, the Russian coach said that Rublev doesn’t know what “humanitarian aid” means as the coach did not understand what Rublev was trying to say and suggest that he should ask Rublev what he meant. Besides this, the coach appreciated the idea but not completely. The coach also thinks that the sport is being politicized. However, the whole world disagrees with Wimbledon’s decision.

Why procrastinate incomprehensibly? I think this is all wrong. Sport has been politicized. The whole world opposed the decision of Wimbledon: Navratilova and Djokovic. I don’t know what Rublev wants to prove or explain when he mentioned humanitarian aid. Besides, I don’t even think he knows what humanitarian aid is. We have to ask Andrey what he had in mind when he said that. He tries to act carefully so as not to be “caught”. I don’t really understand that kind of talk,” he said.
