Ash Barty became the latest name to be put on the honours board of the Wimbledon Championships as she won the Wimbledon 2021 title defeating Karolina Pliskova in 3-sets in the finals of the Women’s Singles.
Barty capped off a successful fortnight at the All-England Club winning the Championships dropping only 2-sets throughout the tournament. Barty dropped set in the first round and then only again in the finals as she went on a rampant run going into the tiebreaker only once in her remaining 5 matches.
Barty won her 2nd Grand Slam title after winning her first at the 2019 French Open. While it was her first Wimbledon title, it was not the first time she won a title at the All-England Club. Barty had also won the 2011 Wimbledon Juniors title and went on to win the Grand Slam again a decade later.
In a special video tribute by the official Twitter handle of the Wimbledon, a compilation was put out showing the video footage of Barty lifting the title in 2011 and then again in 2021.
Ash Barty was not completely fit to play in the Championships this year
Ashleigh Barty has been on a roll this season having already won 4 titles so far this year from the 5 finals she has played this year. The World No. 1 had her share of problems as well. She had to withdraw mid-match from the 2021 Italian Open and then again at the 2021 French Open due to a hip injury. She tried playing with a bandaid but it did not help much and she had to retire.
Upon examination, it turned out that the injury was a bit serious one and her team was informed that she could be nearly out for 2 months due to the injury. Barty did not play in any other tournament on Grass and after the French Open, returned to action directly at the Wimbledon 2021 unaware about the extent of her injury as her team did not disclose the details to her.
Barty was lucky enough to not encounter the issue again during her run at the tournament and managed to stay on her feet and not slipping on the Grass. The surface at this year came into question after injuries to Serena Williams and Adrian Mannarino that forced them to retire.
Barty will now be back on the court at the upcoming 2020 Tokyo Olympics where she will be chasing her maiden Olympics medal.
